    Internet problem

Thought about time I asked the experts on this problem I've had for some time.
I can be quite happily surfing the net and then if I try to go to a different site I get the message
"Looking up www.xyz" where XYZ is the site I want to go to.
I have had this problem for months well longer really. The problem is solved with a reset of the router, Now it happens across different routers so I discounted them.
I though then it was my internet connection so carried on with a reset of the router.
I have recently purchased an internet radio and the odd thing is it carrys on playing music proving my broadband connection is still there also the web page I'm on still works ie if using a messanger system I can happily carry on chatting for as long as I want, but going to another website or page is a no no.
The same happens with IE or Firefox.
I am at a loss where to point the finger of blame. It isn't a regular occurrence maybe once or twice a day at most, though last evening happened 4 or 5 times in a couple of hours. Been okay this morning
    so far.

    Re: Internet problem

Seems like a DNS issue to me, what DNS server is your PC set to use?

    Re: Internet problem

    IPv4 DNS Server 192.168.1.1
This is the address I use to set up the router. Currently using a D-LInk DSL-G604T but have same problem if I use a Thomson router.
DNS configuration is set to as follows

DNS Relay Section set to Use Auto Discovered DNS Server Only

Only alternative is disable DNS relay

Im confused how if something is set incorrect the radio works fine all the time.

    Re: Internet problem

I would try hard coding your DNS settings on the PC to the Google DNS settings of

    8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Its possible your ISP DNS is having a wobble.

    Re: Internet problem

If I try to alter the DNS address it then says I cannot use the same IP adress and asks for a different one for that.
I'm not very good at any of this stuff, but I'd like to point out that I had same problem with past ISP not just current one.

Maybe provide a screenshot of what is shows? I'm not a networking pro, but I have done a few uni modules in networking/network security, so I have some knowledge.

Haha, typical, posted at the same time.

That should be ok, try opendns as well. Replace those DNS values with these:

    OpenDNS free dns server list
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

    Re: Internet problem

    Hi
Thanks for all the help guys. The story has changed slightly. My stating the Internet radiuo carried on working was partially true.
When I lose the ability to get to new pages/websites the radio carries on if still switched on. If I switch it off and on again it gives me a continual "connecting" message ie it doesn't connect.
Now when the problem was evident I checked the router settings, under the Management IP setting
the default gateway was 195.166.130.11 If I then reset the router the web access returns but the default gateway is then 195.166.128.242 Even to my mind this seems odd.

The default gateway is most likely an isp thing and not really anything to do with your home side of the connection.
Did you try to change your dns settings?

The radio is probably buffering music into memory so it appears to be still connected. By turning it off and on you will be clearing the cache so it fails to connect.

This is probably partially true, I would have thought it would cache the DNS as well and only update it when there is a station change or a power cycle. The same would happen for messenger, once its got a connection to the messenger servers it wont need to do a DNS check for them again
