Using own router on BT Infinity

I want to change by router (currently supplied with the BT HH3)

I know you have to use the white openreach unit if your on Infinity,

I tried changing to my belkin router (just to test) and inputed my username and password in the PPoE settings

The router showed that it was connected to the internet, however when loading a webpage it was looking for the homehub ....

Im sure its something obvious that im doing wrong, but has anyone got any ideas on what the something is ?

    any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

Re: Using own router on BT Infinity

To clarify on settings: You can use any cable router to attach to the supplied vdsl modem. Using pppoe, the username/pw is bthomehub@btbroadband.com / [blank]
but you can put a single character in the pw if your router doesn't support blank passwords.

What do you mean it's looking for the homehub?

Re: Using own router on BT Infinity

This is the setup I presume you've got?

If so, as Blastuk says, you can simply substitute the HomeHub for a router of your choice. With infinity in mind, I went for this TP-Link - http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-W...9151892&sr=8-1 Works fine, but much like the standard Infinity setup, you cannot see the config page for the Openreach VDSL modem.

The other option is to replace the whole lot with a single VDSL Modem/Router (an ADSL2+ Router will not work due to the Infinity service being VDSL). Original Openreach VDSL modems tended to overheat, so you may prefer this option if you have the budget and want to replace it.

What do you mean it's looking for the homehub?

Maybe that is where i was going wrong

I was putting my bt username and password in

    eg xxxxxx@btinternet.com
    Password - xxxxxx

so if i just put in the bthomehub@btbroadband.com then it should be ok. ??

    * what i meant by it was looking for the homehub is when i used a different router, i clicked IE but it wouldnt let me go to any webpage, it would just go to that homehub main screen that has the B's on it (im sure you know what i mean by that).

i will try with the homehub username instead.

    Thanks

Re: Using own router on BT Infinity

You can use a Drytek 2950 with the BT modem (Just ordered mine!) or the 2830 or 2850 hich has both ADSL and Ethernet (cable) inputs, so good versatility or you can use the ADSL as a backup with another ADSL enabled phone line.

If you use the Draytek 2750, you can get rid of the BT modem because it has an Infinity compatable modem built in.

Re: Using own router on BT Infinity

I set up my TP-Link for a static IP as provided by BeThere, but I don't think BT offer a static IP on their retail Infinity service.

Is there an option (as there was on my TP-Link) to run through setup selecting 'Dynamic IP'? If so, that should prompt you for all the values you'll need and you can go from there.

    That was really easy. Thanks.

The Cisco router setup was really easy too. Routers are so easy to configure now, they were so much more difficult when I first started using them around 12 years ago.

Wink Re: Using own router on BT Infinity

hi all newbie here we are having bt infinity option 2 installed very soon and i have a router asus DSL-N12U which i am using on the adsl, now in the router settings it states this in a setting called Internet Connection - Ethernet WAN Ethernet WAN allows you to connect the fiber/xDSL/cable modem cable to your DSL-N12U specified Ethernet WAN port for a fast Internet service. If Ethernet WAN is enabled, DSL WAN will be disabled. If Failover/Failback is enabled, the Primary WAN connection is DSL WAN, and the Backup WAN connection is Ethernet WAN. now would this work with the bt infinity modem that the engineer will install?

i was considering buying this router if i could not its the TP Link TL-WR2543ND 450Mbps Dual-Band Wireless N Gigabit Router from amazon £34.69 mixed reviews i have seen.

Hi there, I'm wondering if you're having a good experience with your BT infinity broadband from this new N router. I'm considering to buy one N router but confess to be lost with the ammount of information. I'm from MK too so maybe you could help me setting up my new one...
    Please get in touch.
    Cheers.
