Help with router setups please

Morning all,

OK, this may not be a runner, but I thought I'd better check....

I'm on VM, and have their Modem connected to their D-Link 615 router. PC, BR player and wireless laptops all working fine.

I also have a Netgear MP101 streamer that I've been wrestling with for some time. My wireless signal doesn't appear to be strong enough upstairs to get that to work, so I plumbed in a Cat5e cable. For whatever reason, that also refuses to work, maybe due to cable length being 20 metres. It works fine downstairs with a short Cat5 cable.

So, my thought was, get another router to act as a booster via the Cat5e cable upstairs. Got a nice little USR off Biscuit for postage and tried it out on a short cable downstairs but it doesn't work how I hoped. I simply connected it via one of the 615 router outputs into it's WAN socket.

The MP101 still refuses to see any of the media servers I know are running on the PC.

Is I bein fick ? Can this be done? If not, no worries, but if it can then how?

Don't use the WAN port on the "boosting" router.....that will route....just plug both runs into the LAN ports instead....and turn off DHCP on the "boosting" router.

Still, 20m is WELL within spec for cat5. Did you make the cable yourself or buy it? There are only 2 ways to make a cat5 cable that will work effectively over distance. Other combinations of wiring can produce a connection but distance will make the speed drop until you have no connection at all. It's all about the twisted pairs being twisted in a very specific way.

and now I know why it never worked in the first place.... It worked fine downstairs with a different cable, but as soon as it went upstairs it failed. Turns out I'd damaged the cable when installing.

All is now tickety boo as they say

and my MP101 is no longer for sale
