FTTC Packages for heavy downloaders?

Looking for a FTTC package that is designed for a heavy downloader.

Can do over 200GB some months.

It cannot be BT. I never ever want to call BT again as long as I live.

Also has to be under £50/month......so business packages don't really fit.....and I do not want anything that bills past a usage limit.

If you can schedule large downloads overnight then Plusnet could be an option, it would come well under budget.

They are technically part of BT however so far, their customer services have been decent for me.

I did have a gander at PlusNet.....but the 18month contract is putting me off.

Zen looks good (always have done IMO) but they want to charge £14 + vat per month for a landline....and I really do not want to give BT another penny ever.

landline is one advantage plusnet have, you can pay it all upfront and save yourself quite a bit overall.

18 Months put us off a bit at first but, we aint going anywhere for a while so... what the hell

Why don't you just pick Virgin 50mb, without a phone line it's £34.99 something, I guess when they add all the hidden ****, it turn out to be £40/50 or so.

Sky has no usage limits although speed is dependent on the area you are in(I seem to be in a crappy area for speed).

VMs traffic management policy will be changing, and all packages will be traffic managed to some extent, under review atm, no idea what is going to happen there tho.

VM = Not a chance. Seen way too many people get stitched by them.

PlusNet = T&Cs just are not for me. 120GB allowance (during 8am - 12am)....and then they charge £5 per 5GB afterwards. Sheesh.....no thanks! Plus way too much is throttled and traffic managed for my liking.

Currently looking at "U TV" - looks like an Irish outfit.....£25 for completely unlimited (40/10 service) + £13 for phone.....12 month contract....£33 install cost...and it's only £13 for the first 3 months.

Almost seems too good to be true.....anyone ever used them?

Well, after 3 phone calls to them and 2 hours waiting for them to call me back as their sales lines were at capacity.....I finally decided not to go with U TV....

I am going to give web tapestry a try instead. £25pm, no limits. £40 install fee and 1 month rolling contract......so if they are bad it's only £40 wasted!

To add another one to the mix...

If you can schedule some of your usage and avoid heavy daytime downloading Monday to Friday, I can recommend Andrews & Arnold.

I was surprised to find just now that it's already been over three years since I migrated to A&A. I'd been with Zen for the few years that I'd had a Broadband service before that, migrating mainly because decreasing allowances were making for a restrictive service just as the likes of iPlayer were starting to become interesting. I could type a lot about how good the staff of A&A have been since then and how satisfied I've been with the company and service as a whole, but it's simplest to leave my recommendation and include a link to the page that outlines the usage-based framework employed by A&A.

There's a lot of flexibility and fairness built into the system and if you can be comfortable with those 9AM to 6PM hours, it works brilliantly.

Oh and as you've mentioned it, non-fibre accounts are one-month rolling contracts too! Fibre currently has a term of twelve months.

Unless they roll out a fibre package soon, I doubt you'll be the only one cancelling to move to FTTC...

After the reported delays, there were items on the Broadband-related sites a couple of months ago describing BE furthering their upgrades by involving BT/Openreach for fibre. The cost of fibre accounts was described as carrying a "not excessive premium" (according to BE's managing director) and not being less than the Pro package.

When I was asked by BE why I was leaving I told them it was because of their lack of fibre and their lack of information on when they will supply it.

All the girl could tell me was that they are "definitely considering offering fibre"....which to me sounds like it's still a LONG way off.
