So what's the upside of this compared to Infinity? The lack of peak-rate torrent traffic shaping, in exchange for being slower?

Re: sky 40mb fibre rolling out truly unlimied broadband

I had my 40 meg installed yesterday. Seems decent enough. I'm getting the full 40 meg but I live on a fairly new estate.
I'll let you guys know how it goes after a week or so

getting about 2.5 mbps download. which is on a different level to the 300kbps I was getting.

Taking into account the pitiful upload still, I can't see me cancelling my BT order even with Sky going to 40meg. It's slower on both accounts.

From everything I've read, BT is clear: No caps at all, and only throttling on P2P at certain times.

    Suits me.

Maybe the ****tards at Sky will make sure our connection is actually closer to the 7MB that our exchange can support- we only get 2MB. People in our area with Virgin get 10MB.

Re: sky 40mb fibre rolling out truly unlimied broadband

Hmm - I used to work at Sky Broadband / Network Services. Last time I knew anything about their fibre plans, they were just going to be reselling the BT/OpenReach offering. Reckon I need to have a few beers with my old colleagues and find out if they've got something technically better or not.

And regarding slow ADSL ... yes it sucks. I'm about 1km from my exchange and still only get 4-5 Mbps. I used to get 8 and then "something changed" which I'm sure was OpenReach rewiring something but they never would admit to it. Could be worse though; I could have aluminium lines or something nasty.

Sky is also doing Fibre Unlimited Pro £30 per month, upto 76mb for new customers at the moment:

Would be interesting to see what virginmedia do with their 60mbit price wise, I'm currently on 30mbit (60mbit soon) which is £30 per month, same price as Sky's unlimited pro but sky is faster.

Re: sky 40mb fibre rolling out truly unlimied broadband

Sky broadband CS is useless. We are on Sky Unlimited and the interchange can do 7MBPS+ and even their own checker it says 7MBPS to 14MBPS.

Guess what we get?? Just under 2MB.

For the last two years, everytime we phone up they do some BS and the speed rises for all of a week and then it seems on the nearest Sunday the speed reverts to ****e(seems the router gets a request from Sky and it suddenly drops down). We have just given up with the amount of times we have had to ring their technical supprt. Its probably their stupid DLM.

Last time we were getting near enough 7MBPS for all of 10 days.

They are just a load of scamming scum and since if it was my connection I would have ditched them yonks ago.

I will never ever go with Sky if it was my own connection - I have had much better experience even with Virgin and even flipping Tiscali in shared houses.

People in our immediate area have Virgin and they much higher speeds than us.

Sky can stick their fibre up where the sun does not shine.

Re: sky 40mb fibre rolling out truly unlimied broadband

Are there any more who have signed up to Sky Fibre yet? I want to get a better idea of the service as I'm currently with Be* down speed is 23mbs and I've always been happy but I can't pass up the fibre opportunity due to similar pricing.

My only gripe with Sky is that you have to change your line rental over to them and I've heard quite a lot of complaints on others forums.

I would never consider Virgin or BT to be credible options due to their obscene traffic management policies.

P2P being throttled at peek times isn't really obscene compared to what Virgin do. There are no caps with BT, and the torrent speeds are still very fast, even when 'throttled'.

For reference I can still upload at over 2MB and download at around 4MB when 'throttled' at peek times usually (on P2P that is)

As a non-torrent user I'm quite happy with BT - I get 6+MB/s down all the time with no issues of shaping or whatever. Can't see myself wanting to sign up with the clowns at Sky.

Re: sky 40mb fibre rolling out truly unlimied broadband

Just curious what is your average usage per month guys?

I've always stuck with ISP's who don't have traffic management therefore when its come the time to look for alternatives I'm finding it a hard task. I've been through UK Online to Be* moved over to O2 for a month and was shocked at down speeds of 25kb/s during peak which to me was something out of the dark ages due to never experiencing this type of restriction. The only P2P I do nowadays is Usenet.

I wouldn't say I'm a heavy user although I don't feel that it's right to pay to be restricted with my BB when there are still some companies who offer none/minimal intervention.
