    Internet Connection Sharing

Just planning in advance for when I get broadband (Novemember )
Was wondering how I could share my net connection.
When I use ICS I have to set all my other machines to dynamically get their ips (DHCP?) but I have a pair of wireless accesspoints on my network that create a bridge and they have to have static ips, can't dynamically set them.
So how would I go about sharing my broadband (hopefully a 2mbit adsl line)
    Cheers

just set up ics like normal for the machines

and with the static clients so long has there in the same range has the dhcp clients ones just use the highst ip for them so not to clash.

But then, how will I know the IP addresses of the machines, I've only just learnt the static ones I have, that would give me trouble in some games where I use a direct connection to play, with DHCP I wouldn't know the Ips.
Routers use DHCP aswell dont they?

    yes routers can use dhcp.

if you wish you can use static threwout but you will have to set the gateway/dns address's on all the machines.

Main machine with inet connection would have ip of 192.168.0.1
Second machine would have a ip of 192.168.0.2

    and so on.

Now with the access points just set them to use the end of the ip range ie 192.168.0.253 and 192.168.0.254

May i ask why you have a pair of access points in bridge mode ?

can i ask wat os your using ?

btw i used to use ics and had it configed as such

    1st with inet 192.168.0.1
    2nd laptop 192.168.0.2
    test box 192.168.3

i also had a server that i used static on which i set to 192.168.0.254, i had to set the dns/gateway on it to point to 192.168.0.1.

All this way before i got my router which now does the job of the ics machine, the only thing that chaged was the ip range default on this router is the 10.0.0.0 range so 1st gets 10.0.0.1 2nd gets 10.0.0.2 3rd gets 10.0.0.3 and the server is now on static 10.0.0.254

btw with this router i can make the ip static has such threw dhcp, which means when ever the machines ask for a ip they get the same one no mattre wat .

Yeah, was just reading an old thread by Paul Adams about disabling DHCP, seems you don't have to use it, can use static ips then.
I have a pair of AP's in bridge mode because I have 2 networks in 2 seperate buildings, we can't run cables across, so I set up a wireless bridge to allow the 2 networks to communicate.
All the machines are using Windows XP Home and one has XP Proffessional on.

Pritty easy to get the ip of the machine in dhcp, if like me you have it set to show the little network icon in the bottom corner just right click it select status and then click the support tab that will give you the ip

other way is threw the cmd line

    start
    run

    cmd

    ipconfig /all

Wouldn't DHCP change the IP address everytime it is reset or a machine is taken of the network (sorry for my n00bness)

Yes it would in theroy but i have set them to be given the same ip every time they connect

but dhcp does allow you to set a static ip threw dhcp

also in dhcp there is a time out period / renew period that means that if in a certain time you reconnect the machine will get that ip again.

one thing if you do use ics to share the connection just remember that it will set it's self to 192.168.0.1 for it's ip on the lan, now if theres any other network device with this ip it will cause a clash and if you network bridge is on another ip range you will not see the ics machine as such.

at the moment I have my 2 bridges on 192.168.11.1 and 192.168.11.5 respectivley, so I would just change them to 192.168.11.253 and .254 respectivley to solve the problem. [edit: well, it would stop any clashes] I get ya now!
I'll probably get some kind of router when it does come, will be simpler.
Can you recommend any decent Routers, wired but wireless would be an added bonus and can you give me some prices?
    Cheers Apex

Just been looking at their Speed Touch 500 single port and 4 port ethernet router, i have a network with 8 machines on, an 8 port switch in one building (where the ADSL will be) and a 5 port switch in the other building. With the wireless AP's plugged into each switch. Now how would connect the router to the network, just plug into another Cat5e port or have I gotta use some uplink port or summat?
    Cheers anyway for the linkage
