What kind of speeds should I be getting from Sky??

BTW,overview of the little saga we have had with Sky for the last few years:

    http://forums.hexus.net/networking-b...ml#post2429117

The router is plugged into the main socket and no extensions are used.

The last disconnetion happened when internet went down for the whole area for a day.

    Our package:

CAT.... I have no knowledge of Sky other than lots of people whining about them.

the thing is though... if you get 2mb download on an ADSL line, and yuo then switch to Fibre to Cabinet it can only get better.. right?

I agree fibre will be better,as Virgin serve our area. The sad thing is that I have used Virgin ADSL in another place and it was better than this!

Its not my connection otherwise I would ditched them for Be or something similar. Its part of a larger package,so maybe I need to push the others onto Virgin even with their management!

Re: What kind of speeds should I be getting from Sky??

Are you going to be downloading enough to hit Virgin's management thresholds? Unless you're downloading films a lot, 4gb is quite a lot in one day... And even then, say you're on 60mbps, you drop to 15mbps for a while, still twice what you should currently be getting with Sky..

Re: What kind of speeds should I be getting from Sky??

For 2Mb you need to be quite a distance from the exchange. Must be at least 4-5 miles, if not more.

If they say 7-14 est....then it must be within a couple of miles.

It's possible that the line is poor or was poor during the adsl training. Might be worth doing a line noise check (details on BT website). If the line sounds clear ask Sky to force a retrain on the line......might also be worth asking for a supervisor if the person can not give you a satisfactory explanation as to the huge discrepancy between the estimated and actual speeds.
