Laptop suddenly failed to recognise Home Network.

Sorry if this is already been a Thread, but I searched and could not find a similar reference.

Strange one, cured for the moment, but I'd like input in case it happens again in future.

I was logged on, {Wired} and surfing happily, when the call came from downstairs asking if the Router was switched on.

The Laptop downstairs could not log on to our home Wi-Fi network.
We brought it upstairs, to right next to the Router, now it could see nine neighbouring networks, but not ours.
Quitting and restarting Firefox made no improvement.
My iPad was summoned and reported back that our home network was up and running, as normal.
It was late so further research was postponed until the morrow.

The following day, the Laptop found our home network, and logged on without a care!

The only explanation that I can think of is that both Laptop and Router spent several hours switched off during the night, and that this reset something.

Laptop is PC Specialist, Router Netgear 3300v2, OS Vista, up to date with Updates.

Any offers? Just in case it happens again.

    Thanks in anticipation,
    Petra.

Not odd at all; this happens to a number of people that i can think - quick reboot of the router and all is well.

It happens the most to us when we have had a torrent download going; my thinking is the number of connections that the torrent program makes uses up the available mem on the device (and most consumer routers have next to naff all on them to start with) and thus causes the router to lock up effectively - it works for them devices still on but any news ones not a chance.

I could be barking up the tree with this but like i said i see it quiet a bit with friends and family.

Yep, what he said, the "switch off, leave for a minute then switch back on" usually solved 99% of my router probs, nowt unusual I also occasionally have to reboot the PC to get on the network, but that hasn't happened since I upped to Win7.
    Cheers, David

    'Torrent Download',
I guess a first Person On-Line Game would qualify for that description!

Additionally, occasionally if two devices have been turned on at the same time they will try to share the shame IP address and it will create a conflict, with one device being allowed onto the network and the other desperately trying in vain. A restart of the PC/Laptop usually sorts it, again or just turn the router off/on as has been mentioned.

Games can act like p2p due to a lot of them esp for XBox etc being that way these days for the MP side of things; the action causes a hell of a lot of packets to be sent out and a lot of active connections to be used which a lot of comsumer routers don't cope so well with.

If the routers did not have so little internal ram for use this would not be a issue but most only come with a few meg - also a "router" is only supose to route traffic in the proper sense of the terms - not act as a wireless access point; switch for the network; firewall an so on.

I've had that error message, 'Miss! Business Machine's using my IP address,' like squabbling children, a few times. Except of course children actually name the culprit, I wish computers did.

And Apex, it's a new Modem Router. It may be that Netgear have crammed even more extra functions into it, the box is bigger, but maybe not the memory.

It seems that far from being an Strange occurrence, the possible reasons are Legion.

Thanks everyone, when it happens again, I'll know what to do.

    Petra.

Re: Laptop suddenly failed to recognise Home Network.

for me it's often the laptop wifi failing not the router.

ie.. laptop off.. reboot.. it works

Rebooting the router always seems to do the trick for me Given that mine is a BT home hub, that happens quite often.

Re: Laptop suddenly failed to recognise Home Network.

I sometimes have no connection. Usually disabling and then enabling the NIC works without requiring any reboots. But WiFi issues always seems to be the router (needing a reboot)
