    Cheap wireless to ethernet bridge?

I'm moving into a house which has DSL setup but the (live-in) landlord isn't going to be too happy with me running an ethernet cable from the router downstairs to my bedroom upstairs. So I need a 'wireless to ethernet bridge' (at least that's what I assume it would be called) to sit in my bedroom, connect to the wireless & give me an ethernet connection. I only really need a single ethernet socket, as I already have a nice gigabit switch.

Any recommendations? Scan have an Edimax unit for ~£20 but the Edimax site only shows it being used as an ethernet to wireless bridge & not the other way around.

Now that's a much better idea! Really glad I asked now, as that option hadn't even occurred to me!

Got a pair of cheap Netgear Home Plug adapters from Scan today, plugged them in & works straight away like a treat It reports it's on the slowest signal quality, but the DSL here rarely breaks 400KB/s so I'm not too worried - got a gigabit switch for my room!

For best signal quality make sure you plug the Homeplugs directly into the wall, not an extension cord/surge protector.

Unfortunately I *have* to plug them both into extension cords, as the wall sockets in this house are (apparently retrofitted) in the skirting boards very close to the floor, so I can't fit the ethernet cable in

They both report the lowest of the 3 possible signal levels, but the DSL here is only 4Mbit & that's the only thing I'm using the Home Plugs for (have a gigE switch in my room for transferring files between machines) so it's fine. A lot less lag than the sketchy wireless too!

Do you have a couple of sockets you could stick a basic, one plug extension cable into? If it doesn't have a surge protector or multiple sockets adding interference you might get better results.

As I said it only has to managed 400kbit/s which it does fine on a basic short 4-way with no protection/filtering.

Re: Cheap wireless to ethernet bridge?

I use simple 2 socket splitters where plugs in my house are too close to the floor. I use the 'top' socket. There's little or no degradation; there's no wire or electronics in them. Best, they cost less than £1 at ASDA.

Hadn't thought of those! I'll have a look next time I'm at the supermarket.

Re: Cheap wireless to ethernet bridge?

One thing to note with powerline is that sometimes with the cheaper powerline adapters is that they advertise as being capable of 200mbps despite the ethernet chips in them only being rated to 100mbps. If you get decent ones though that shouldn't be a problem
