That's interesting as I'd read of the Openreach modem sometimes overheating. Mine's fine though, you can feel warmth if you touch it but no more than my old Netgear modem/router.

Is yours wall mounted? Mine is which I reckon will help the heat rise out of the vents.

You won't get static IP addresses with BT unless you go for a business solution and pay (iirc) £5/month extra.

My first one overheated and died. Replaced free of charge by openreach.

They are prone to overheating unless they are wall mounted vertically on a wall. (According to a BT engineer that came to sort out an unrelated FTTC problem.)

I went from 7Mbps/1Mbps to 74Mbps/19Mbps with BT infinity. Not problem so far. I'm well happy.
    I paid £25 + (£120 line rental per year)

Well that deserves all the manufacturers right for sticking the VENT SLOTS/holes on the bottom of the routers/modems.

Anyone who did basic science as an 8 year old knows that heat rises so having the holes/slots on the bottom is a fail in my eyes and why I tend to run all my routers/modems upside down to keep them cooler and stable.

Oh and I'm on sky fibre - getting the advertised speeds of 40 MB as the green box is at the end of my driveway

Next step next year - FTTP

They "fixed" it in the latest hardware revision.

Which has a higher thermal cutout configured in the chip.

They are also replacing any of the older ones, so the overheating shouldn't really be a problem with any install now.

My research has found that BT infinity is the best option if you already have your phone line with them and don't want to move that around plus you don't mind P2P throttling (torrenting).

If you need a unlimited/unshaped connection go for Sky Fibre who offer 40/2 for £20 but you will need to change your phone line over to Sky Talk or they offer a 80/20 package for new customers for £30 which again is totally restriction free.

I've been researching this for a few weeks but still not made the jump.
Made the switch to Sky myself a few months ago, absolutely brilliant and no blips as far as I can see. They also gave a free upgrade on the upload speeds to everyone on the £20 package so it will probably be more viable for people who do lots of uploads. I believe it's not £20 for a 40/10 package. Only downside is needing to take line rental but that wasn't an issue for us.

Can someone confirm what's the score with BT and static IP addresses? Obviously don't want to go business (and can't)

BT only offer static IP addresses with business packages and then for an extra (iirc) £5/month.

You can have a business package on a domestic line.
