My Skype is dropping calls quite frequently of late. I've change ports, unticked default, nothing.
Is there any ISP where one can expect a decent speed for skype based calls?

Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
Thanks I will have a look at them. Just of late skype seems to be going downhill. So more than happy to see the alternatives.
I'm a casual skype user so I don't know if a dedicated voip service will be good or just upgrade my connection as fibre is coming live in my area.
Are you sure any traffic shaping is correctly classifying skype. Most will just dump it in 'other' and assume it's P2P.
Is you computer connected wirelessly to the router?
If yes it could be local wireless interference, VOIP requires a very consistent connection.
Have no issues with Virgin Media and ive been a skype user for many years, also tried it over my uni line which is also VM and it was flawless. Skype has been more ad based(annoyingly) and unfortunately i cant convince my friends to go elsewhere (vent/ts) as they dislike push to talk... i prefer push to talk as i can then type as loud as i want have music etc but oh well, skype makes up for it in the pure audio quality that far surpasses any competitor (unless things have changed in the last year, moodle was shoddy crap and vent and ts were tolerable at best).
I wish Virgin did Fox Holes, I'm stuck with Sky's Monopoly![]()
I use plusnet.
Dont know about skype but I can see DSCP field changing on traffic shaping. VOIP seams to be unaffected.
No sure they are the best ISP, but they are 100% honest with management/shaping.
Honest just like their adverts. I used to be with Plusnet because you could cancel before 12 months are up and you didnt need to pay the remaining left. Their down and up streams were quite poor in my area and they had Download limits except overnight which was annoying. I didn't realise how much I was using untill they billed me 50 quid extra, rather cheeky.
After being with Sky and on Unlimited I've been using 160gb Average a month which is alot more than plus net offered.
I don't have dropped calls but the video chat is of very bad quality. Strangely, my mate has not problem doing video chat with family in Asia.
You may want to give this a try to see if your ISP is shaping your line.

I use Zen with around 60/15 doenload/upload speed, but I still get the occasional bad Skype call.
Remember that Skype and most (all?) VoIP services use UDP, so packets can (and do) get discarded over a poor connection. Remember too that the upload/download speed from one location to another may vary - it is the path speed that is important at both ends so if a call to one particular location is poor, it may be a problem at the other end, or some point in the middle.

My broadband speed - 750 Meganibbles/minute
I am still having mixed results with video.
At home have upgraded to fiber with plusnet, work still on regular broadband (1mb up) with BT. Would VPN improve it?
