    A Network Puzzle....

I've just configured an edimax ew-7416APn V2 to connect to my belkin F5D8633-4 v1 as a universal extender so i can use the ethernet port to connect my HP 1400 24-G switch for vairous computers in the office. Interesting thing is the belkin is doing the dhcp but each time i restart the pc plugged into the hp switch (via the edimax extender) it gets a different IP address.

any thoughts/suggestions on what might be causing this?

Are you sure DHCP IP is coming from the same place i.e. you might have more than one server. What's the lease set to in scope options?

DHCP is set to only come from the Belkin (no configurable options on the HP and DHCP disabled on the Edimax). Lease in options is set to forever (which i'm thinking about changing anyway to see if this resolves the issue). I'm assuming its something to do with the way the DHCP packets are forwarded over the extender and passed to the requesting machine but cant see anything definitive within the settings for the router or the extender. Would the fact that the extender is setup on a static IP address outside of the DHCP scope be the problem?

    Nope.

Try setting the DHCP lease to something like 24 hours and see what happens, I'm wondering if there's a bug in the Belkin which is making it assign extremely short leases.

What does the output of 'ipconfig /all' from the PC in question show?

    Re: A Network Puzzle....

shows default gateway correct (belkin), dns correct (belkin), lease expiration of a week and a preferred ip address of 10.1.1.11. I'm wondering if the fact i'm using a 10.X.X.X address is whats causing the problem?

    Re: A Network Puzzle....

No, the network range is irrelevant. You could use 1.2.3.0/24 internally and DHCP wouldn't care.

When the IP address changes, do you still get a valid IP address and internet access?

is there just 1 PC that's having this problem? Can you connect another one to the same switch to see if the problem remains?

    Re: A Network Puzzle....

I can't think of a reason either. I thought it was the Belkin giving short leases but i the PC is showing 1 week lease time then I doubt it is that.

It might be worth setting up a static DHCP entry for the PC and see if that helps.

Any chance you can post a screenshot of 'ipconfig /all' from the PC before and after it changes IP addresses?

    Re: A Network Puzzle....

ok it seems to have started to remember its addresses now.... very odd. I think I'll just leave it as static to save any hassle. Thanks

OK, new problem now. After extended internet use the bridge (currently in wds mode which is the only mode that works) loses its connection to the main router. Wireless signal is strong where the bridge is and simply restarting the bridge seems to fix the issue. I've tried different channels but with no luck. Is it likely to be a compatibility problem with the Belkin router?
