    ethernet con.

    Re prevoius thread....Howard

I'm "not fit to use a computer"

I am trying to link a laptop to my base comp both using XP

They are connected but I cant find a way of accessing one from the other.

What I want to end up with is the laptop able to use the base cd/r

I ran the networking wizard and after about an hour I decided it wasn't doing anything and closed it using the taskmanager and now it wont let me try again

    any help greatly apreciated

Have you set the computers to share the drives you want to access? Right click on the drive in mycomputer then sharing. Do the same for printers.
    just an idea.

    Yes done that

I managed after re-starting the base comp to run the networking wizard. I managed to access the bse comp c drive but then couldnot connect to the internet as it seemed to be trying to connect through the laptop although in the wizard I stated that the base comp was the one with the connection. I have had to restore to an earlier time to be able to connect to write this!

    And Howard saia its easy!

    He lied
You havent got zonealarm have you? This can cause problems if it isnt setup properly. Only other thing is try and run the network wizard from scratch on both systems again, just check that you tell the lappy to connect to net through other PC. Do you have to tell it to share the internet connection, cant remember am using a cheap arse adsl router now is deffinately a lot easier.
    Good luck

How are they connected at the moment? Are you using a hub or are they connected directly with a single rj-45 cable? You need to have a crossover cable if they are connected directly.

To see if the network is OK physically, try pinging one machine from the other.

Open a command prompt from both machines and type:

    ipconfig

Write down both IP addresses, then try pinging the other machine:

    ping <other ip address>

    What happens?

LOL! You shouldn't hold me to my words!!

First as was said make sure the computers can actually talk to each other. Go to Run and type ping <laptop> or whatever the computer's network ID is. Without the <>s of course. If you get responses, it's working and it just needs configuring. If you get timeouts, you need to make sure you're using the correct cable (Crossover for straight PC to PC, standard UTP for PC to hub, etc). You shouldn't really need to bother with much else configuration with XP. They should see each other automatically.

Have you enabled the guest account in control panel > users?

You should just be able to share the CDRW drive and map it on the laptop and use it. Do you just want to access the drive, or burn CDs remotely?
