    Question FTTC modem / router

Hi, I'm getting FTTC installed from ADSL24 next week. I've been told my current router (Netgear DG834GT) won't work so I'll need a new one...

    Couple of questions:-

Can I plug straight into the BT modem temporarily? When the Openreach chap arrives does he/she have any involvement with my PC or laptop, or do they just literally make sure the line is live, plug the modem in and leave me to it?

    Thanks.

Yes, the 'modem' is more or less a simple FttC to Ethernet bridge, so you can plug in any machine which needs internet access while waiting for the router. The engineer will only concern himself with the line, all you'll have to do is plug the modem into the machine and away you go.

    Re: FTTC modem / router

Didn't want to start a new thread so thought I'd ask here... Is it normal to get a time during the day that the Openreach engineer will arrive to install Fibre (e.g morning or afternoon)?

I seem to remember reading other posts that made me think that, but all I've had from ADSL24 so far was an email saying the date (tomorrow) that they'll arrive.

    Re: FTTC modem / router

I would imagine it would depend on the specifics of the agreement between ADSL24 and Openreach - as I imagine would all of the ISPs that resell the FTTC Service. The terms of that agreement will most likely differ between providers and what they were willing to pay for

Ah OK, it's just that as I hadn't heard anything since their email of 14th June I wasn't sure whether to worry or not! Thanks.

    Re: FTTC modem / router

Don't forget that without a router, your computer will be connected directly to the public internet, without the protection afforded by NAT. It is essential that you have good anti-malware software installed, and you are aware of the risks.

    Re: FTTC modem / router

Good point. Currently I'm using my old ADSL Netgear DG834GT and connecting wirelessly through that. I'm still having to "dial up" a PPPoE connection which works from my laptop but not from the desktop which is wired into the router.

I'm getting a D-link DIR615 from ebay so will use that as soon as it arrives.

I did read about unlocking the modem (which I've done) and then using the old router but I wasn't really sure how to do that!

I Would drop ADSL24 an email. I'm with them for LLU & I find them really quick at responding if you have any concerns.

    Re: FTTC modem / router

I didn't get any further appointment info from ADSL24, but the Openreach chap turned up about 8.40am and was done by 9.20.

Re: unlocking the modem, I did get it working as a router giving out DHCP addresses in the end but I had to enter the DNS servers manually in the network connections in Windows. Not sure why. I also couldn't get my old netgear ADSL router to function as a wirelessAP/switch.

Then the D-link cable router I got off ebay turned up the next day and I decided to keep it simple and use that instead!
