    Router Recommendations?

I am trying to get wifi to my garage, it is on the very edge of my iSP supplied router, and despite various wifi repeaters and powerline adapters attempts I'll be damned if I can simply get the extra 5m of coverage required.

So, having forked out £50-60 over the last 18 months trying to get a stable IFi signal, I am now thinking of biting the bullet and simply getting a more powerful router with batter WIFi range to get me the extra 5-10m required to give me a stable connection.

Budget of around £100 ideally, but a router with a decent interface, compatible with your average ISP and with maximum range!

    Can anyone recommend preferred brands/models?

    Mny thanks,

    Re: Router Recommendations?

What are you trying to get a connection to in the garage? Depending on distances and what's in between weatherproof Cat5 cable is a possibility, either to the device that need internet or to a cheap access point at the other end. Possibly more reliable.

    Re: Router Recommendations?

I use a powerline setup to get internet to the garage, and then a WiFi access point within the garage with its own SSID and everything. The there is a separate garage wifi and my phone switches over when I go in there.

    Re: Router Recommendations?

Not exactly cheap, but having installed a few of the BT Whole Home Wi-Fi Mesh systems I can say that they do work pretty well.

You would basically turn the WiFi of the main router off, connect one of the Whole Home WiFi Discs directly to one of its Ethernet ports and have the rest dotted around the house/garage, connected to power only. If you need a 4th, 5th or 6th disc, you can buy singles and add them to the existing mesh network later. Setup requires an Android/iOS phone/tablet as there is no web interface, just an app.

As a bonus it provides near perfect roaming, as the discs actively hand devices off to the next disc when they move around the house.

On the cheaper side is the Tenda MW3 Mesh system. I haven't tried this one, but reviews do seem to suggest that it is decent and on paper it looks suitable for any < 100Mbit Internet connection.

    Re: Router Recommendations?

I would say investigate the options you have bought already again. A more powerful router is still a single point trying to reach everywhere. I'm guessing you're not trying to use the 5-GHz wifi as the range is not so good.

I have previously used powerline adaptors (including a wifi access point) to good effect in an older property where the router had issues going through the walls. They are most reliable on the same circuit (I had micro-dropouts on different circuits which is most noticeable on a wired connection). I have done wifi using the same AP name and password and using different ones - devices seem to be better at switching between two access points these days than a few years ago so for simplicity I'd stick to a single name. The only tweaking you might want to do is to select a channel at the other end of the spectrum.

Running a cable and sticking an access point at the end would be the most reliable but not always straight forward given the property!

    Re: Router Recommendations?

Thanks for the replies guys. The house has CAT6 throughout, but no way of running it to the garage.

The wireless booster sorted of worked, but was too flaky & reduced the speed.

The powerline (as per my other thread in this subforum) just refuses to play ball. Despite trying via WPS & network cabling the main unit it still flat out refuses to work in the garage. I am wondering if its because it has to go through the main fuse box...but I assumed they would be capable of jumping through this!?

    Re: Router Recommendations?

I've run on different circuits before (upstairs and downstairs) and it was pretty solid, just the odd annoying do for a few seconds but not a regular thing. Don't know if the garage is maybe on an additional RCD or something and that impacts it more?

Will check out the other thread.

    Re: Router Recommendations?

This looks like a pretty good router, if you decide to go down that route.
