Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
Wouldn't you know it I smell something burning and it turns out to be the PSU in one of my switches. :surprised:
A quick google reveals it's a common problem with the Delta ADP-40VP PSU, link.
I've tested the fuse on the PCB and it hasn't popped however the PCB around the failed cap and lower MOSFET looked burnt so I'm wondering if it's worth attempting to repair or just replace the PSU and hope for the best?

Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
Well I decided to replace the PSU.
Ordered an Artesyn NLP40-7605J PSU from Farnell (PN:1516423) for £40.98 delivered also available from RS (PN:629-5721).
Side by side (Delta ADP-40VP top, Artesyn NLP40-7605J bottom):

Now looking at it the Artesyn PSU has the input power polarity reversed, however I doubled checked the polarity with the IEC C13/C14 connectors and cables and it's the Delta that's reversed, black is live and beige is neutral at least on my 2716 so no rewiring was necessary, I always like to observe polarity even if it's not required. The Artesyn also has a easily replaceable fuse and a few Rubycon caps so I would expect it to last longer than the Delta.
I checked the output from the Artesyn and it was a stable 5.00v DC then rebuilt my switch.
Working again:

If this was an 10/100 fast ethernet switch then I probably wouldn't of bothered repairing it, however the Delta ADP-40VP PSU powers quite a few gigabit 16/24 port switches as well and considered my 2716 worth saving from the scrapheap. My 2708 doesn't share the same PSU unfortunately though it's another Delta this time a ADP-30JP, I just hope it's as easily replaceable if or when the time comes.
Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
Nice thread rs - very inspiring. Fortunately I've not had a PSU die on any of our Dell switches, but it's good to see someone not prepared to simply chuck them or send them off for repair!
Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
Had a Dell PowerConnect 2716 die yesterday, replaced capacitor C3, and it works again!

Glad the C3 replacement worked for you, my PSU looked too far gone to considering it.
Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
I had a power supply go bad in my Dell Power Connect 2808 and it had a ADP-30JP in it. I was able to find a power supply from Jameco electronics that had the same specs and was mostly a plug in replacement though the screw holes did not all line up. $24 shipped, was way less than any other replacement ps I could find and I didn't want to try my hand at soldering ;). I used the open frame Mean Well PS-35-5 part number 1918972. Hopefully that will help someone out there.
Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
This thread came up in google for "powerconnect 2716", and I was just about to look around for a replacement PSU but thought I'd try replacing C3 in the PSU:
- checked the voltage was 5V output across the red/black output afterwards
then reconnected the circuit board and all is now working again !
Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
I had same problem as above: changing C3 solves problem, switch is working again :-)
Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
My 2716 died yesterday and I ended up on this topic after searching for a possible fix.
I'm going to try finding someone with soldering experience to see if replacing the C3 capacitor will fix the PSU, but I'll probably just end up ordering a new PSU to give a few more years of life to this switch.
I've noticed that RS has the PSU Artesyn NLP40-7605J at £13.86 while Farnell price is £35.85.
Anyone willing to order it from RS and ship it to Portugal? I'll cover all expenses and pay in advance of course. Thanks!
Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
Hi folks, first post here.
Seems my 2716 developed the same problem that some of you have experienced. Dead PS. Upon searching a bit, I stumbled upon this thread, and there is a description of "replacing C3" ... As I analyzed the circuit, I located C3, which is a tiny green 47uf cap next to the big switching XFO, the large 400v 100 uF cap is C1, so as I was removing it, one of the legs just fell off! The PCB is a bit yellowish around that are but not as darkened at the picture of the OP.
Mind you, "TAICON" caps don't inspire much reliability, so I was thinking of replacing both C1 and C3, but a radial 400v 100 uF cap is a pretty hard value to locate. Mouser has a few (Nichicon) but specs indicate they will be too big to fit in the tight space allocated...
To those who successfully revived the PS, what cap brands did you use? Any other parts I should be looking at replacing also?
I would have posted a photo but it seems i'm not allowed.
Thanks!

Hi, it is also for me the first post.
I have a power supply dead, and the capacitor C1 is not working (tested with a capacimeter).
Now I have ordered this capacitor in RS Components, # 840-4738.
It has the same value and the same size, as soon I have replaced it, I'll post an update.
Regards
Marco

Ok... replaced the capacitor, nothing change.: it remains dead.
So now I'll replace all the power supply: is faster and cheaper.
Regards.

Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
I had similar problem with my PowerConnect 2716: dead PSU.
Fuse F1 was blown. Bridge rectifier (on opposite side of PCB next to heatsink) had internal short. Replaced both but still not working.
But from reading this thread, I took a closer look at the large capacitor and it indeed looks bad, too. Once I find a replacement, I hope that'll get the switch up and running again.

Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
If the capacitor pops, there is a chance it will take the bridge rectifier with it - not always, but sometimes! As an earlier poster said, RS (rswww.com) are a good source of quality components, as is Farnell.
Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
In my powerconnect 2724 with the same power supply, I replaced the 25v 47uf capacitor in c3 position with a 50v 47uf capacitor from an old ATX power supply. Works great now. The c1 capacitor child have also been replaced with parts from the ATX psu
Re: Dell PowerConnect 2716 dead PSU
Thanks for the info, I managed to find this info from Google.
You have helped me revive my 2716!
