Your explination of what you have setup isn't too clear Daymonkey.

Take a few minutes to check the name and model of the router, how many ports does it have?, Your win2k machine and XP machine how many network cards have they got in?.

You want both to be able to access the internet without the other one, if so the router needs more than 2 local ports as well as the cable connection from the set top box.

Let us know if you've got that and we'll try and help some more.

the router i am not really not sure what make it is as it does not say in the manual. or on the router but here is that it says in the manual 4 port 10/100m broadband router with usb print server . the pcs they have 1 network card in each which are built in . the main connection is plugged into the right port in the router as i have looked in the manual and it says on the router so that is correct. i have even ran the network setup wizard and everything on the pc and they still dont go on the internet.

Hokey cokey; in the setup you describe, your router should have a bank of 4 network points, which are for your local network. Each of your two PCs should be plugged into one of these. There should be another similar port on its own which is the WAN port, and the Cat5 cable from your NTL box should be going to this. Is this how you're set up?

The first thing that occurs to me is that your router's MAC address may not be registered with NTL - certainly with Telewest, who I'm with, the hardware (MAC)address of the device connecting to the Internet must be registered for it to work. Is the router a new addition? If so, can you connect using the PC that was originally connected up without using the router?

You should be able to do this online, i'm not on NTL but i setup up Zak's router and he is on NTL, i remeber him showing me a web page where we configured his new Router's MAC address onto the system to allow many machines on the network.

If not phone up NTL customer services and ask them for the web address to do this on?. - Either that or its something to do with restarting your NTL box to get it to allow that machine on.. Sorry only done this once before and memory on how is a bit shakey...

    Hope this helps

Probably not necessary; lots of routers have the ability to clone the MAC address of a network card in a machine plugged into them. Can you get to the router via your web browser from the machine that works without the router? i.e. plug that machine into the 4-port bank? The address'll probably be something like http://192.168.0.1 or something, depending on what the internal network address is - if your PC gets its IP address automatically, you should be able to open a command prompt and use ipconfig /all to see what its address is, and your router will probably .1 on the same network (so if your PC was 192.168.0.100, your router would be 192.168.0.1). If you can, there's probably an option in there to clone the hardware or MAC address of the PC. If you do this, make sure the "working" PC is the only one plugged into it at the time. You should also be able to see what make and model the router is at the same time which wouldn't hurt.

edit: Had to do this with my first router which fritzed out, my second which wouldn't set up a VPN tunnel and the one I currently use, which work were kind enough to lend me
