    Switching from Virgin - Suggestions?

    Hi everyone.
Currently i'm on Virgin broadband and phone but the contract ends soon.
The phone line's ok but the throttling and caps on the broadband suck; if ever i want to download more than a few hundred Mb's, i have to do it between 9pm and 9am or we get crippled with a 200kb download speed (from the usual 1.1Mbps) for a while. And keep in mind that this is shared between a few people.

I don't mind whether it's DSL or cable, and a 10Mb line is fine for a minimum, as long as 24/7 downloads are genuinely unlimited. I'd also like to rent a new phone line from whoever it may be too, so any bonuses or nice prices there would be great.

Whilst at Uni, i used BE broadband, and they were great.
But i've had a look around, review sites and forums alike and have seen better prices here and there for DSL lines at least.

One i've noticed is Aquiss: http://www.aquiss.net/
Who seems to review well but i don't think are really that well known. The prices are good too.
Similarly there's ADSL24, who as far as i can tell are a reseller of the same services that Aquiss use, or at least were (Enta.net?). Their prices are pretty similar to Aquiss in places.

Either way, does anyone have further info or experience on/with any of the above?
Or maybe someone's got a better suggestion, it's all good here.

Honestly, if you don't need to download that much then go with Talk Talk; I'm on them now, used to be on Tiscali but they were unfortunately bought by them. One good outcome of this was that they upgraded my connection to 24MBps but my router only supports 100Mbps so I cannot reach the full potential of my line.
I currently get 10MBps down and 0.9MBps up on average so I would say the connection isn't too shabby.
Occasionally there are major problems, not sure if it is down to my area being upgraded again or them but it's usually very quick and finishes after a while.
I only pay £20 for Internet (24MBps), Phone package (Free offpeak international & national calls) and line rental.

Re: Switching from Virgin - Suggestions?

hmm, being traffic managed already, so pretty sure he needs to download a fair amount. 2nd Point, Talk Talk do not have a 24MBps service to my knowledge, as this would equate to roughly 200Mbps, and your 100Mbps router is easily capable of transferring 24Mbps, but not 24MBps (note the difference between Bytes and bits please). 3rdly, its hardly endorsing a company and recommending it by saying that occasionally there are major problems.

My advice, get a faster connection, the VM 30 meg connection should be a similar price to what you are paying for 10, the traffic management polices are changing in next couple weeks (refresher at work this week) meaning only 50% throttling for an hour, 75% for 2 hours if you break the 2nd threshold, which even then will basically give you 9Mbps when throttled.

Anyways, if dead set on leaving VM, be looking at Infinity, because its pretty much the only thing that will get close, if your exchange is upgraded and you are close to it.

Sorry for the mix-up, I'm extremely tired.
I shall correct my post when I'm more awake in the morning

I was with BE for 2 years and they were great. Truly unlimited and no traffic shaping whatsoever.

I'm on BT Infinity who are also good. They offer 'unlimited' downloads but will shape traffic so that's something to be aware of (although there are ways to get around this).

Cheers guys, i'm still leaning toward going back to BE as they really were good, but i'll have a look into the other suggestions.
