    Help with Router choice

My Router just packed in and am borrowing one from a mate till I get a new one but not sure what to buy.

    Old setup was thus :-

Linksys ADSL Modem/Router (over 3 years old) with D-Link Sharecenter NAS connected directly.
PC in living Room connected via 200MB Homeplug
    2x Laptops connected via wireless
    Xbox in Bedroom via Wireless
Sat box in Lounge connected via 200MB Homeplug for streaming from NAS

ISP is Talktalk and speed is 14.23MB DL & 0.87MB up

Do I need gigabit ports? would this help with streaming of video?
Am I better off with separate Modem?
What should I be looking at - budget wise £50-£120 would be ok.

    Very good budget.
For your setup you don't need a router with gigabit port.
A gigabit port provides speeds upto 1000Mbps if using a cat5e/cat6 cable and both sides of the connection have a gigabit port.
Your homeplug only supports upto 200Mbps and your average router has 100Mbps ports. So even if you had a gigabit port, the max you'd get via homeplug is 200Mbps (theoretically).

Your NAS is connected to your router and can transfer at speeds of 100Mbps to the router. Then your router is connected to a homeplug via a 100Mbps port.
If your streaming a very big HD file then we can assume 35Mbps out of 100Mbps is being used, that leaves us 75Mbps out of which you may be streaming to to your pc at the same time, which would still leave us 30Mbps, more than enough for your internet connection.
Wireless doesn't run on a ethernet port so that is subject to distance and interference.
Gigabit can possibly give you the full 200Mbps your homeplug is designed for but refer to my calculations above.
    Don't get seperate modem.

What I recommend you do is ring TalkTalk and ask them to send you a new router.
Tell them the old one gave up and it's about time they sent you a new one.
If they disagree you can talk them into sending you a new ones, you know 'I'd rather move to BT' or something.

If all fails then have a look at the TP-Link TD-W8961ND; on amazon it costs only £30. It has 4x 100Mbps ports.
If you buy it, make sure you head over to TP-Link uk website and fill in the 'say no to sluggish wireless networks' promotion and get a free wireless dongle before 15th sept and email it to them.

Many thanks for the helpful reply. Had looked at the TP Link router mentioned but wasn't sure on the gigabit port issue. Will buy as they seem a reasonable buy at the current price.

    Re: Help with Router choice

Just for info, your 200Mb/s homeplugs only have 100Mb ports on them so you'll never see 200Mb/s across them no matter what. In real world usage due to noise and quality/age of ring main you'll be lucky to see 30Mb/s.

    Re: Help with Router choice

I regularly get 10MBps transfer rate over my powerline adapter, which equates to 75/80Mbps really. They aint too bad.

Only thing I would disagree on in the above posts is to future proof. More and more devices are coming with Gigabit ports, good idea to have a router with them on.
