    Ethernet-Coaxial-Ethernet?

    Hi, I dont know much about cables and the signals they cary, however i want to know if the following is possible?

    I had a virgin router downstairs and am currently running an Ethernet from that router to the loft through an Ethernet cable that goes in and out of the windows (outside of house). I dont have time to feed the cable through the floorboards and everything properly and it is getting colder now and having the windows even slightly open for this cable is becoming a nuisance.

    there is however a coaxial cable that runs through the walls from the downstairs room containing the router to the loft room. Is it possible to use adapters to convert an Ethernet cable from the router downstairs, to the coaxial cable, and then another adapter at the end of this cable in the loft to connect to the pc there? essentially putting Ethernet cable ends onto a coaxial cable?

    Any help is appreciated

    You can get such devices,but the cheapest ones cost between £50 to £100 and have to be imported from the US it seems.

    Seen this one in the UK:

    That is rather expensive! Maybe it's might just be better to find a free day to do the cabeling myself!

    Re: Ethernet-Coaxial-Ethernet?

    I looked into this in my flat, because Virgin had installed a coax between two rooms, one of which I wanted as an office.

    In the end I just yanked out the coax and fed an ethernet cable through there instead. Much better
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    If the coax gives, I'd try gaffer taping one end to some bare cat 5/6 then seeing if you can feed it through. If it does, crimp a couple of rj45s on the ends and Fanny's your aunt. Failing that, I guess there's always powerline?

    Re: Ethernet-Coaxial-Ethernet?

    If the coax is decent quality, you could 'loop' the existing incoming coax to it to take it to the room?

    Otherwise, could you do the last run with flat Cat5? It used to go through the edge of my window fine (so that it could be fully shut).
