    Need router to replace Superhub.

The Superhub just isn't feasible for our household any more. Dropped connections and lack of signal is rendering our hefty bandwidth near useless.

I've been eyeing up some of the Asus ones but tbh, I'm out of my league in terms of router knowledge and what i should be looking out for. I'd rather not go up to £100 on a router as well, not knowing whether or not we can manage to get more than the two bars/11Mbps we get now in any room other than the one the S'hub is in.

    Suggestions?

I know where you are coming from with that Terb, new firmware has made some difference, but not enough I feel (btw factory reset and change to channel 6 if you aint already done so, new drivers seem to favour this). A few folks have been mentioning flashing standard routers with DD-WRT, might be useful for you.

My Uncle has given me a D-Link DIR-615 with DD-WRT but its faulty and barely improved the signal.

I've got an RT N66U and am very happy with it. The wireless signal is much stronger than that from the SuperHub and other than to do firmware upgrades I haven't had to reboot the thing since I got it.

The RT N56U gets good reports too, I've got a couple of friends using them and they're very happy with them.

Check out the TP Link routers. My wireless N, 4 gigabit port job cost me about £40. The Web interface is very good and easy enough to use. The wireless signal is strong too, usable down at the bottom of my garden which is about 30 feet away through two walls.

It's not a Virgin "Superhub" by any chance is it? There's nothing super about it at all and we're having major issues with wireless connectivity recently (since the upgrade)... 802.11G with the PS3 and our printer seem to work ok, but 802.11N with our PC's and Xbox 360 is a real pain! Signal is crap and the connection is always lagging and dropping out! Whenever we do get a good signal, our 300mbps wifi adapters run at only 130mbps... And i don't even think it supports mixed mode

We've tried different configs including 300mbps, 150mbps, 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz and have tried different security encryptions... Enabling 300mbps or 5Ghz band renders 802.11g devices useless . Virgin have also fiddled around at their end and always stick to the script when you call them (tell you to reset or power off the superhub for 30 seconds etc... Usual stuff.). Many Virgin customers are suffering with these poor qaulity hubs at the moment .

Options are pretty limited when it comes to setting these things up (it usually gets done automatically from their end).

2.4Ghz band, 144mbps mode, channel 9, WPA Auto encryption. Also make sure the hub is nowhere near a TV or anything like that.

If those settings don't work, you can have Virgin send out a tech to move the hub to a better spot, or you can save yourself the hassle and buy a separate router and stick the hub in Modem Mode.

Re: Need router to replace Superhub.

Rather than just picking a random channel and hoping for the best, download inssider, install it to a laptop, set it scanning and walk around the house with it to see what channels surrounding APs are using. Of course, it won't detect interference from other devices operating in the band but sharing a neighbour's channel is a common source of interference.

Despite having 13 channels to choose from, it's only possible to have 3 non-overlapping channels, generally 1, 6 and 11, which is why most off-the-shelf routers pick one of them. If there's an unoccupied space, switch your router to that. If not, pick the one with the lowest noise floor.

You may have more luck with the 5GHz band if your devices support it, as it's less commonly used, but range through walls is generally poorer.
