you could try www.freeuk.com, free to join, all you pay for is the calls, which are 0845 local rate numbers!

i've used them for 2 years+ before i went to ADSL

Not brilliant, but pretty good, and you don't have to sign up. Only the cost of a local call too, so if you want infrequent access it's pretty good.
