Powerline Adaptors - Pick your sockets carefully!

So wifey decides to download a film on Sky On Demand and comments that it's taking ages (unusual for her to notice). Now we have BT Infinity and all remote network enabled devices are connected via Powerline Home AV200 plugs (a mix of TP-Link & Ebuyer value ones), so in theory download speeds should be ok when not connected directly to router.

So today I decide to do a simple test on the speed coming out of the homeplugs by directly connecting them to a laptop and going to Speedtest.net. Most of the other adaptors have download speed of about 45Mb/s which is perfectly acceptable and about right. But the one that all the home av plugs into in lounge is only producing 3Mb/s. So I change the socket that it's plugged into, to one a couple of meters away and bang it's back to 45MB/s, repeat this a couple of times to verify and yep that socket is much slower than all the others. Don't know why but I wont be using socket anymore for ethernet duties!!

So moral of the story, if your getting slow speeds from your powerline plugs check the sockets first.

I had the same issue, but it was related to the age of the wiring. New wires in the extension wwork just fine. Victorian cast-iron connections were barely usable.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

is the other soket on the same ring main?

have you checked the wiring on the other socket.

Just wondering if you've got a cut ring main, this is something you should attend to, as under some circumstances can cause fire which you might find your insurance firm not paying out on.

Hi mate, yep they're all on the same ring main so I guess I'll be checking the wiring in the socket at the weekend.

    Cheers
