Slow broadband and not sure why.

My broadband lately has been disconecting so i did some speed tests and i get between 0.2 Mbps and 1.4 Mbps. The connection is very choppy. In day time i get 0.5 Mbps to 1.4Mbps and after 5pm usually around 0.2 Mbps and disconects.

I phoned BT to check my line for faults and they found none and said i should be getting 8.0 Mbps.
So i tryed different wireless adapters , different routers i tested it on ipad , iphone and a laptop as well as my PC and all get the same bad speeds wether on a wireless connection or via ethernet.

I got an (N) wirelass adapter and an (N) router and the signal between thous is 108 Mbps to 200 Mbps so pretty strong signal.
This is the weird bit i don't understand i think it means the speed my router is receiving from the phone line.
    Downstream line rate (kbit/s) 6127

So if thats what the router is receiving where does all the signal go???

    Any ideas much appreicated.
Don't know much about networks and stuff it's always worked but now isn't so am worried is there any software i can get to diagnose where the leakage is coming from or should i get someone who knows about these things to come and fix it for me.
I also tried different leads incase one was faulty and new phoneline filters.

what speeds do you get if you plug your laptop straight into the router? this will at least narrow it down to wifi/interference. If it works fine when directly connected (or even over wifi, when your laptop is closer to the router)... try and find sources of interference (baby monitors, tv senders, microwaves, neighbours wifi, etc). Also 5GHz wifi is likely to have less interference with those aforementioned things, but doesn't have the range or the ability to penetrate walls as well as 2.4GHz

Re: Slow broadband and not sure why.

Think it's my ISP i'm with AOL talked to a few neighbors they not having problems and their with BT. So rang AOL up said i trouble shooted my end and can't fix it. They kept saying it must be a problem with my setup. So i asked them to send a technician around and then they said it was a problem their end. Went away a few days was hoping it would be sorted by time i got back but it now worse.
Disconnects in daytime Hmmm... never dissconected in daytime before.
Any way will ring AOL tomorrow and if they can't sort it tomorrow will stop paying them and swich to BT as they seem to be quite reliable in my area.
Its's quite funny i get a better connection with my 3G mobile provider than with my ISP.
Just read i can use my mobile phones internet as a hot spot and connect through that so will give that a go.

Need to move somewhere with fiber optic my friend has Virgin fiber optic and can download a film in one minute. I can download a film in 12 hours if im lucky.

Just changed from aol to talktalk which switched today, its jumped from 4.3 to 6.5 with my upload from 0.35 to 0.67, As the router they supplied is bigger than the computer, I switched it to my netgear dgn2000 gigabit router and the speed dropped back down. How old is your router?

Am a bit slow at replying LOL..
TalkTalk = AOL = all bad.
I Use 3G mobile broadband. With iPhone as a router is limited to 2mb download and upload but is very stable...
AOL limit upload speeds...And are rubbish and greedy and indian call centers and if they know you ring them on a mobile they stall on purpose as they are premium rate number and get paid if you on a mobile.

Re: Slow broadband and not sure why.

Ring talktalk and ask if your exchange is one of the ones which is oversubscribed as it sounds like whats happening at this post Here

If it is, change ISP and put a bit more cash behind it. You get what you pay for in ISPS at the end of the day and I bet you'll spend more on a takeaway in 1 night than your ISP bills for the month

Re: Slow broadband and not sure why.

OH ty that is exactly what is happening...No one sent me a response like that.I am short of patience with things that don't work.I prefer to pay more for something that works reasonably. Than get something that gives me headaches cheap.
but i will ring them up now as they put my bill up for some reason and not told me about why and they can't fix problems there end as they are incompetent. So might just try to get through to manager and say i want to end contract and a refund would be nice.No point telling one there call center drones they just say...Well i put you through to another department that will fail to help you also...
