SFP+ fibre modules - are they all born equal?

As topic really. I'm eyeing up some 10GigE adapters which are at the right price, and I've found some Dell N743D SR modules also at the right price, but since there is such a huge range of prices (even used) for modules it has me wondering if they are all as good as each other.

    Cheers

I don't know about SFP+ modules but I've found that when using Cisco kit, the "Cisco compatible" SFP modules worked just as reliably as the genuine Cisco ones. The only gotch was that (IIRC) the genuine Cisco 1000Base-LX (Long haul, Single mode) SFP modules had a much longer range - as in appx 5-10 times longer officially than the compatible ones.

Some times the SFP+ modules won't work. If you find this is the case you can switch off the compatibility check. This will invalidate your warranty though

    In conf t

    service unsupported-transceiver

    Then

    no errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid

    Edit

Sorry I thought you where using Cisco! I'll leave the above commands in just in case some one else has the same question about Cisco gear

Looking at some Mellanox ConnectX-2 10GbE adapters and the cheapest modules I can find, which looks like these at the moment. All new to me though, lots of new terminology to understand. At least the fibre patch leads themselves are surprisingly cheap, £17 or so for 30m!

Re: SFP+ fibre modules - are they all born equal?

Some controllers/switches will refuse to work with non-certified SFP+ modules. But general case? The SFP+ modules are not an area where what you spend denotes performance.
