Can i seperate Broadband usage between two pc's

Hi, Is it possible to check which pc is using what amount of my broadband???. I have two pc's connected to my router (netgear DG834G) and would like to see the broadband usage for both.

The reason why is because I (after much pestering and begging) I connected my brothers pc to my router, Im on BT unlimited package but find I'm getting capped within a few days of the month, Also my useage seems very very high, Now he says he just watch's a couple of youtube vid's, D/L's updates for windows, n games but thats all. What I cant understand is why the usage is so high so quickly, I work 5 days a week on 12 hour shifts so my own pc usage is limited to a few hr's a day, and gaming on my days off, I also D/L but not a lot.

I've disabled the wireless on the router months ago as we dont use it. I checked the router to see whats connected and its only the two pc's.

Is there a program that will monitor broadband usage between both pc's so that i can see if it's me or my brother who's using it????.

    Cheers

    Duffer

As far as I know, you've got two options.

Option 1 is to install software on his PC to monitor network usage, but that probably won't work as he could do whatever he wanted with it, i.e. disable it temporarily, wipe the records, etc.

To do it via the router, you would need a custom firmware I suspect, like this one: http://forums.hexus.net/networking-b...-firmware.html

I'm not sure that particular one will work, depends on compatibility with the model of your router, but you get the idea. This place will provide more info: https://openwrt.org/

of course another option would be to install the monitoring software on your own PC.

just take what you use and subtract it from the total used and you will have his usage, plus if your PC is passworded he won't be able to mess with it.

    Here's an example of what Gargoyle can do;

That's my network's internet bandwidth usage on the 28th of December, I can look at bandwidth usage from the past months or days and also hours or minutes form the recent past.

Can you not check his PC for torrent software(It may be seeding and he doesn't even know, maybe ask him this)?
Does your router have any QoS settings or settings for P2P?
Has he asked for any ports to be opened?

Re: Can i seperate Broadband usage between two pc's

I used du meter on all my computers for a month to see how much bandwidth I used in order to see what sort of broadband package I was looking at, should be fairly useful to you as well.

It's a paid service but the first month is free, I'm sure you'd be able to assess who's pc is the problem in that time.

I may have to pick up that belkin n1 router, it looks awesome.
