    Netgear DG834 and BulletProof FTP

Anyone know how to set up the firewall to allow BP FTP to work as a server?

I've opened ports 20 and 21 from the Firewall Rules menu, and enabled passive FTP in BP, but anytime I try to connect, I get a Cant Connect: unknown error number from the ftp client

No sign of anything at the BP end - any ideas what i'm doing wrong?

You routing the traffic to the right IP address? as in your machine? i.e in the firewall rules for FTP you are sending it to 192.168.0.2 (most likely as first machine on network you should get .0.2)

Check that and make sure its logging, then try from the outside and see if you get any log traces show up any problems?

I can go in via localhost, but if I use the external IP address, I get the error I mentioned.
    Code:
    Outbound Services
Service Name Action LAN Users WAN Servers Log
FTP ALLOW always Any Any Match

    Inbound Services
Service Name Action LAN Server IP address WAN Users Log
FTP ALLOW always 192.168.0.100 Any Match
0.100 is the local machine it should be routing to - and there's nothing in the router logs to show any attempt, external machines can't connect either

There is a major bug in netgear routers with ftp , I've had loads of problems with ftp. I have found that the latest version of my router software/bios has fixed it. I have the DG834g so hopefully it will work for you.

Version 1.05 from memory, you can check your version in router control panel thing

Are you sure that this isn't just a loopback problem? I setup an FTP server on my main machine and tried to FTP into it from my laptop via the external IP address. Never worked. Tried it from outside the network (a different net connection) and it was fine. My guess is that if it works at localhost, it should work ok onthe outside. Ask a mate to try it out.

pritsey is right: there is a local loopback with the DG834.

If you try to connect from anywhere inside the lan to ur local network IP of the FTP server (eg 192.168.0.3) you will connect fine. If you register your IP address (say using the services of dyndns.org) to a hostname, then the IP of the router is the one that is registered. You can set the router's config to forward connections to the appropriate server from outside the LAN.

If you try to access ftp://yourhostname.dyndns.org or even the WAN IP from inside the network, your connection goes from your computer to the router but stops there, as the router says something like 'hey, thats my address, heres the stuff you want'. It doesnt bounce your connection off anyone else.

To setup this bounce, you have to use a HTTP or an FTP proxy (depending upon what you need).

    1. (HTTP) http://www.anonymizer.com
    2. (FTP) http://wazer.net/ftp2web/

Both of these will allow you to test whether ur LAN FTP server and router config works and allows people to connect from the internet.

Without this proxy, you will in effect be asking to connect to the routers FTP and HTTP ports.

    Hope this helps.
