    Best FTTC provider

I was just checking to see when BT have put back Infinity in my area to this time and I spotted it's available immediately!

Looks like I can definitely get Sky, BT, and Zen - not sure about others.

I don't download masses, I would have thought ~ 200GB/month would be more than adequate in most circumstances.

I have to do lots of Linux work, and I've found that connecting to the torrents is usually the fastest way to get access to whatever weird and wonderful distribution the latest customer is running.

I also occasionally need to VPN in to home so a static IP address would be kind of useful.

What's the best FTTC provider at the moment? I'm moving from Be* - unfortunately they don't do FTTC

    Re: Best FTTC provider

If you go with BT you will need to get BT business for a static ip.

Zen have static IPs with their packages.

You could just use no-ip, DynDNS etc.

I'm sort of leaning towards BT, purely because if/when it goes wrong there's only one person to shout at. How often does IP change under dynamic? Every 24 hours or so? I guess that could be OK.

I use plusnet for my FTTC, get unlimited for 19.99, and static IP was a one off fiver many years ago.

Over the years plusnet has been great, service spot on, and service centre great on the very few instances I've had a problem.

Oh, and they really do mean unlimited.

Bt have network management so between 4pm-12am your P2P will be throttled quite badly. I would go with Sky if you can.

I think I may go with Zen, its due at my exchange this year, not sure if it will make it out to me though. If it doesn't then I will have to get a petition up or run my own single mode fibre! lol

    Re: Best FTTC provider

Actually zen host my company websites. Do they traffic shape? Not necessarily a problem as I can, in most cases, just download the boot ISOs for Linux and then rsync the repos I guess.

Oh, one other thing. Anyone subscribing to Lovefilm/Netflix - what sort of bandwidth does watching a film eat?

    Re: Best FTTC provider

Sorry for thread revival, but didn't to start another one on the same subject.

We've also just had FTTC enabled (brought forward from June!) and while VM hasn't been too bad lately, we're still considering moving. Am I missing something or are Plusnet a fair bit cheaper, even when you factor in line rental, than BT? I can't see any clauses to the 'unlimited' claim, but does anyone know what their core network is like? For example, even VM occasionally have peering bandwidth issues with sites like Youtube/iPlayer.

While things are going OK, I'd hate to get locked into a contract only to end up with more problems, but it's still nice to have options. A 3>6 upload bump from VM might help their case too :wink wink:.

Actually it's not bad. They only seem to lower the traffic priority and not totally screw it up like some ISPs. I regularly get almost max downloads over torrents, without a VPN in out of peak times. Even in peak I still get a few MB/sec, so hardly going to complain

Plusnet are cheaper. I thin they've been capturing the budget end of the market, but also catering for the tech savvy. Whereas BT market to the masses and charge a premium as the masses don't know any better.

Plusnet core network has been great over the years but of course past performance is not a guarantee of future performance.

Plusnet use traffic prioritisation rathe than throttling, thus traffic that needs to be real time (eg. Skype), will take priority, but this is over your connection only (helpful if multiple users in the house). They may of course use this approach over the entire network in the future, which may look similar to throttling.

Have a look at the Plusnet user group for more info: http://usergroup.plus.net/
