Using your own router with BT Infinity - help with Draytek 2820 please?

Hi All,
I've just had BT Infinity installed at home. My broadband has jumped from ~ 6 Meg down to ~ 60 Meg down, so I was a happy bunny, until I swapped out the supplied Technicolor wireless router for my Draytek 2820Vn. Now speediest shows that it's fallen back down to ~11 Meg!

I have disabled WAN1, enabled WAN2 and set the duplex to 100M full.

Dropping to 100M half ups the speed to ~ 26M down, but it's still way slower than the cheap Technicolor router I got from Zen. It also seems like it takes an AGE to sync if I power cycle the router.

Do I need to make any more changes? I really need the additional functionality I get from the Draytek, but it's all a bit pointless unless I can get a decent downstream speed.

To clarify I have:

BT Master socket --- Openreach router --- Draytek/Technicolor router ---- LAN

I have the same setup as you, don't remember having to change the duplex to 100M half though. Currently set on auto negotiate, and using latest firmware.

Edit: Sorry I have a 2830n not 2820 so dont know if that changes things.

Are you with Zen? If so give them a call as their tech support people are very helpful.

I have a draytek router with my Zen FTTC service, and I am getting 60 mb without any special settings

So I turned off all the QoS/DoS/Load Balancing settings and set the Ethernet WAN port to 1/2 duplex and it sprang to life. Weird stuff, but at least it's working!

I presume you have set the Draytek to PPPoE with the username being bthomehub@btbroadband.com? (Will it even connect without it?)

The Draytek 2820 is not rated to the speeds required for BT infinity. You either need a 2850 for a direct connection or one of their cable routers if you plan to still use the BT termination gear as well. Remember it's an old piece of kit from before FTTC.

Think of it like this: You are asking why a Ford Focus 1.6 is only able to do 100 MPH on the Autobahn despite the speed limit being non existent. However someone with a cheaper car with a more powerful engine and slippery shape is faster.

Good luck with it but I doubt you'll get the speeds you hope for.

Well technically speaking it IS a cable router. The 2820 has a 100Mbit WAN port in addition to the ADSL port. I realise that the CPU in the router probably saturates at when the firewall hits ~ 50Mbit, but I would still expect to see more than the 5Mbit or so I was seeing. In any case I've managed to get it up to ~60Mbit/18Mbit by forcing half duplex. It's not ideal, but it'll do until the 2x60 series routers make it to market in April.
