    lan help

hey, ive just tried posting this once and either it didnt take or its going to appear somewhere completley random

anyway im hoping i could get some adivce on setting up a lan, im a battlefield fan boy and could happily spend days connected but my current set up wont have it, ive got a 750k broadband connection with ntl split between 3 pcs using a switch and 10/100 cable router. im stuck using cat 2 cable liberated from leeds met a few years ago and the 10mbps ethernet card that came with my mobo.

id like to know what i need to do to make gaming online less frustrating (gigabit ethernet?), and if wireless is worth shelling out the extra money for?

    thanks

Get rid of that CAT2 cable and grab some CAT5. You could even crimp your own cables if you like, but I find the stuff by Belkin (cat5e/6) are great and reliable!. Also a new NIC is in order...really.

I've brought a couple extra lengths of Cat5 with me from home, and if you want to get some of me let me know but I suggest shelling out on the Belkin stuff.

GigE for gaming is a waste really and wireless isn't the best for gaming either (alright but not ideal for obvious reasons). Grab a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 card or 3COM 10/100 NIC and some new cable and you'll be set.

Btw, I'm @ Leeds Uni (not met) ...nice to see someone from Leeds here.

Why would 100mb nic be better than a 10mb for playing over a 750k connection??

I'm not "in the know" of cat2 but cat5 is so cheap its worth upgrading and likewise although 100mb nic is a bit pointless they are so cheap you might as well try them.

Agreed there would be no gain in moving from 10mb to 100mb, although the cat 5 upgrade may add stability, you might want to flash to the latest firmware on the modem too (if ntl allow this).

Could be a lot of other things thats dropping your connection though.
