Connecting Wired Devices to wireless router

Ive had a look through the forums and cant find an answer to my problem but that may be because i dont know exactly what the technical name is, for my problem so hence the post.

I have Virgin home hub upstairs with main pc wired to that and numerous wireless devices around the house connected. My problem is i have some wired only devices downstairs i would like to connect and need what i think may be called a bridge solution. I dont want to run a cable down stairs and i dont want the plug in adapters, i think i need something that will connect wireless to the home hub that i can plug my wired devices (3) into.

Can anyone suggest a device from Scan please?

Plug in adapters would be the simplest solution. Aside of that you could use a telephone extension and move your router to your wired devices.

This would suffice, but its not from Scan:

Could you explain more as the spec looks similiar to the other model and i do prefer to buy from Scan which dont have the other model but have that model you say might require a better router.

Re: Connecting Wired Devices to wireless router

The link i posted was for a router that could also act as a 'client'. So in client mode, it would negotiate the connection for several devices and communicate that with your router wireless as a client (like a computer connection). The Wireless bridge on the other hand would need to connect to your hub in 'bridge mode' which would need to be set up on the hub, and bridge. The Bridge boasted easy connection with a 'WPS' button (auto configuration between devices) that would need to be pressed on both the wireless bridge AND the hub. The problem is, that your hub may not be 'WPS compliant'. Being a proprietory fibre optic hub i would expect that this is very likely. What you would need to do is to purchase a fibre optic router with WPS to talk to the wireless bridge. Although, it would also depend on the possible configuration options on the interface of both your existing router (hub) and the wireless bridge. Without being able look at the configuration options of either, it is difficult to be certain that they will be compatible. However... What you CAN do is download the manual for the wireless device your interested in and see if it does have configuration options that will work with your router (and check them against your router options ). That way you can have a better idea of whether or not they will work together.

Re: Connecting Wired Devices to wireless router

Cheers for that i understand what your saying and will check these out before i purchase anything now i know what to look for. Networking, wired or otherwise is not my strongpoint as youve probably guessed and i am out of my comfort zone.
If i went with the simple solution of plug in adapters (sockets all on same ring main) would or could i plug more than one device in or have to use a port/hub thingy plugged into the plug adapter for 3 to 4 devices to connect through the plug adapter.
I want to put my Tivo, cctv, TV and blue ray player on the network and they are all in one location downstairs but i dont want to be plugging in and out cables all the time. I am eventually wanting to have a home media network with all my devices accessible and controllable from a server upstairs.

Re: Connecting Wired Devices to wireless router

You'll have one wired ethernet connection from the plug at your destination. So you would plug that into a router, switch or hub and connect your devices to that. You could buy a simple switch for next to nothing (from ebay i would suggest) and it would solve your problem easily. Rather than trailing cables you can go for the plug ins, or you could just feed an extension from the first floor through the ceiling direct to your destination, but thats up to you

Re: Connecting Wired Devices to wireless router

The Superhub does have WPS,as does the standard hub, not a fan of it tho.

The WPS button is the virginmedia sign on the front that glows blue in router mode (superhub), pressing it activates WPS, holding it down toggles the wireless (really should be separate) The standard hub has a separate WPS button.

The WPS pin for both devices can be found on the back of the hubs, or from within the config pages 192.168.0.1 username admin, password changeme

I've got one of these http://www.scan.co.uk/products/edima...-5-port-switch
I use only 1 port right now for iPlayer etc on my freesat box. I've got it in client mode. I believe I can connect several devices to it like this.

Yeah. Thats what makes the difference. If it can act like a client, then it can offer shared connection to the devices and connect to the main router without any unnecessary configuration on the router.
