    Router log question

Every time one of the allowed machine logs on it shows up in the log with the ip address the router has given to it. Now for some reason when my father laptop (via wireless) logs on it gives him an ip address, but it give two with the last two numbers being different.

Any idea why this is happening?

edit: I did see when i booted into windows on his laptop that where the wireless icon is it did turn to the symbol that usually indicates a wired connection, but then that quickly change back to the wireless symbol. And when I logged into the router it did show there was 1 wireless connection (his laptop) and then 2 wired (my pc and his laptop again).

Anything to worry about or just something odd?

Sounds like some sort of strange network software that the laptop has is causing this to happen. As long as only 1 IP is pingable I doubt there is anything to worry about.

Well did a virus scan just in case and nothing. The DHCP client list will show one constant ip address for the laptop, but every so often a second ip address will appear which when I check the firewall log is an OFFER being sent to the laptop. The ip address that appears first of all in both the firewall log and DHCP remains in the DHCP, but the second ip address its last two numbers change in the firewall log (goign up by 1 every an OFFER is made). Is the laptop for some reason holding on to an old ip address?

What do you mean by one ip address pinging? In the router firewall when I turn his laptop on two ips will show, but from then on only one will repeat with OFFER etc.

I know sometime when i turn my xbox (wired) on it will show up in the logs, but sometime say my pc is also on although the ip for it will stay the same it will say its my xbox (if that makes any sense)

    Re: Router log question

Had another look at this today! Does the wireless and wired card in a laptop have the same mac address except for the first entries ie. 9b: etc ?????

Now looking at the router log the wireless mac/ip address turns up once, where as the second mac address which I assume is the wired connection will appear more than once. Can anyone help me on this?

the wireless/wired card *could* have similar MACs, generally only if the wireless and wired chipset are from the same vendor though. YYou can check this by doing

    ipconfig /all

from a command prompt and checking the Physical Address.

    Re: Router log question

Ok had a look this morning at the ipconfig /all and found that the wireless lan adapter (which is the wireless card), has nearly the same mac address as the wireless lan adapter wireless network connection 2. That is the mac address is the same but for the first two letters/numbers. Now under wireless lan adapter wireless network connection 2 it said microsoft virtual wifi miniport adapter, what is that? The odd thing is that the mac address for it shows up as a wired connection on my logs.

Is it some wifi hot spot? Bit like I can use my phone to connect my laptop to the internet? Is there a way to disable it? And if I do disable will it cause any issues? or if I leave it any potential issues ?

Tbh not sure sure how my dad turned it on.
