    Thumbs down Virgin media speed caps - new supplier?

    Have been with virgin for a while now and I am currently on the 60meg package (as well as TV and telephone). However, I am getting more and more fed up with the speeds I am getting at peak times. I know I should expect some reduction, but recently it has been ridiculous. Watching sky go for example on my iPad is impossible, as is streaming YouTube videos.

    Once upon a time, virgin used to be the best in the business as far as broadband was concerned, but I don't think that is the case any more. Anyway, my contract is up with them in a couple months, which provider would you recommend? Would like at least the same speed as I am on now (60meg).

    EDIT: quite happy with virgin TV and telephone, so don't need to change the whole package necessarily, unless a good deal is available.

    Just a thought, but it may be worth getting in touch with Virgin and seeing if they have any upgrades scheduled in your area - usually if you're having speed troubles, it's due to oversubscription/underprovisioning (same thing in the end). Mine's been terrible all year, but turns out that they're meant to be fixing it imminently.

    If you want to match the speeds, you'll need BT Infinity, which is available through Plusnet, Sky, BT and Zen. There are probably others, but I get the impression those are the ones worth considering. This is probably a good place to start: http://forums.hexus.net/networking-b...-provider.html

    Just rang virgin, they said there was no planned upgrades for the area, but he did log onto my PC, then onto my router, and change some wireless settings, which was all a bit pointless as my PC is hard wired (and I told him so), but as i mentioned I had an ipad he set up a new wireless network for mobile devices, then said i would have no more problems! ha. I then asked how changing the wireless settings will improve the connection of my hard wired PC and he said he will monitor my account for 10 days. Think I will just run a speedtest every day during peak times for a few days, then call them back...

    how do you know it's virginmedia at fault and not sky being hammered ?

    best way to find out is to do a test download from the vmedia FTP site when you have issues.

    Have other problems too, YouTube videos buffering constantly. I use xbmc on my PC for watching tvcatchup app, also unusable, even web pages taking much loner to load than normal. Will give FTP a try though.

    I was with Virgin before. Moving over to Zen internet was the best thing I've ever did. I think reliability of connection is more important than speed.

    Just ran a speedtest, at 14:48pm on a wednesday (so not even during peak times) and here is the result:



    I am on the 60Mb package, and was told by the engineer on the phone that I should always get a minimum of 50Mb in a speedtest

    Hey,

    I been with Virgin for around 6 months now. I'm on the 100mb package. 9 out of 10 times normally get around 104Mb down and around 9Mb Up at peak times. I do download a lot too. I heard a lot of bad things about VM but I have only good things to say about them but maybe it is just the area I'm in.

    I have been with them for around 2 years, and never had any problems in the past. Really good team of engineers too, I had a V+ box and a super hub die on me, and both times an engineers was arranged quickly and when they arrived they put a lot of effort in to making sure everything was working as I wanted it too, and gave me advice on how to get the most out of the products I have. Its has only been about the last 4-6 weeks that I am seeing a dramatic loss in speeds during peak times.

    I had read somewhere that VM are known to cap speeds during peak times, if you use a lot of bandwidth in that particular day, but this is reset at midnight of the same day, is this true?

    Hmm, so they only cap speeds on P2P usage? That must not be the problem I am having then, as this is affecting iPlayer, YouTube and even web page load times.

    TBH I was having problems playing 720 on YouTube on Monday night but it was fine on Tuesday night and it been fine today. I only see my speed capped when downloading large torrents.
