    Broadband w/out Line Rental

    Hi Guys,

We never use the telephone and live off freeview so all we need is decent unlimited broadband without requiring a telephone line / line rental. I know Virgin offer this, but with their capping strategy in place I am against using them.

Does anyone know of any other suppliers they can recommend?

    Cheers

It's not possible - you need a line.

VM still charge line rental iirc, or something similarly named - you don't save anything with them anyway

No they don't, it's entirely possible to have VM cable broadband without a phone line.

I don't see how they can do it without a phone line, it's VDSL delivered over copper to your house but fibre between the cabinet and the exchange.

I have BT fiber 100mb (with phone line rental) and i pay £30 PM ... so I would say they are still charging you for it anyway ... just because they say no phone line rental doest mean they aren't charging for it ....

I know it is, but does that mean they stop charging line rental?

EDIT: Ah, knew there was something weird. The answer is no, you don't have to pay for line rental, but if you don't, they increase the cost of the broadband to compensate - in fact, you pay more overall without a phone line. Excellent.

It varies and they're very inconsistent about it. I have no VM phone line and pay £29.50/month for 100Mbps cable broadband but if I took a phone line they'd add about £5/month for it.

    Re: Broadband w/out Line Rental

So it looks like they roll up the cost of the line rental with the package rather than charging sepereately. Somewhat misleading!

BT charge line rental because they own the copper network, and the line rental pays to maintain and repair etc. Virgin own and operate their own cable network independent of BT, and decide to maintain it out of their profits rather than assigning a set cost per customer.
This means virgin CAN offer without line rental if you don't take a phone line, since it will have no impact on BT's copper network. Should you want a phoe line, BT will charge Virgin a reduced line rental fee based on some complex formula around meters of copper wire in an area and number of cable / copper transfer poinrts.
Virgin then either offer this reduced rates to customers, or charge the normal fee, pocketing the difference to maintain their own networks.

Thanks to the Virgin customer services team for that insight!

Still, since Virgin is more expensive generally and data speeds are unreliable.. I don't see much benefit. It also means no other companies will be able to offer this without inflating the base service prices since they all run off the Cable or BT network.

I don't think Virgin offer phone lines to customers outside their cable network area and they don't use BT Openreach at all for that, they have their own copper to the premises and provide the phone line over that.

Broadband without phone lines like satellite and fiber optic broadband gives you better speed reduce infrastructure cost also. It offers more flexibility in working.
