Wired router - will this work?

At home I have a PC and two NAS boxes. Currently they are directly connected to the PC but I want to put all three devices on a network. I also have a crappy ASDL modem/wireless router which only has two 100 Mbps ports.

    1. Am I right in thinking that I can connect the modem to the WAN port of a wired router with gigabit ports then connect the PC and NAS boxes to the router in order to get all three devices online and connectible to each other? I take it that given my ADSL is much less than 100 Mbps it doesn't matter if the link from ADSL modem to 1 GbE router is slow?
    2. If so, what's the cheapest gigabit wired router available with at least three ports?
    3. I guess laptops connecting to the ASDL modem/wireless router won't be able to see the three devices connected to the wired router?

    Thanks,

Do yourself a favour - just pickup a 4 (or more) port gigabit switch and connect it to your router, then connect the NAS boxes and your PC to the switch. It'll be cheaper you can pickup a reasonable quality gigabit switch like the Netgear GS105 for under £20.

Re: Wired router - will this work?

get one of these http://www.scan.co.uk/products/netge...tch-200-series a gigabyte switch. (doesn't have to be that one, its just an example)

cable from port on back of current router to back of the switch.

    plug everything into switch.

voila a gigabyte network. you'll need cat5e cables to get 1000Mbs though.

its the way my network is setup. after I asked a similar question a while back. seemed the easiest and cheapest way to increase the speed.
devices on the switch can access devices on the router.
as for whether the wireless ones will see other computers files, that's down to how you setup the wireless access connection and sharing options.

ive got wireless turned off on mine, don't trust it because of too much sensitive info on my computer. so can't help with setting that up.

Thanks guys. I thought of that but wasn't sure whether the router will be able to route at gigabit speeds if it only has 100 Mbps LAN ports? Or is that not the case?

switch to switch devices will do 1000Mbps,

switch to router will do 100Mbps

    router to router 100Mbps

Re: Wired router - will this work?

Perfect! So I only need 100 Mbps cable between the router and the switch and 1 Gbps cable for all other devices in the switch?

Also, what's the best cheap 4 port GbE switch then? Second hand is fine...

Re: Wired router - will this work?

your wireless devices would be restricted by the 100Mbps link between router and switch, but they're already hampered more than that by the wireless link. All kit connected to the switch will do gigabit speeds (assuming you have gigabit interfaces on each device and not shonky cabling)

There's not really much to gain by going second hand with the switch - either the one Stevie linked to or the one I linked will be fine though (only real difference being that the cheaper one has a plastic shell, whereas I prefer a nice solid steel case)

I'll probably get the switch above as it seems low power and has 9K jumbo frames. Any thoughts?

Or is this worth the extra? http://www.kikatek.com/P191172/TEG-S...tch-5-Port/REF

Re: Wired router - will this work?

    them 2 should work.

I was waiting for someone else to answer about them as I know very little about what make is better than another. but hey look shiny enough

i'm just taking the lack of answers from the rest of the hexites, as them thinking the questions been answered, no point saying anymore (which i've noticed tends to happen)

so just take it as answered that any of the 4 linked in the posts above should work

Just noticed that the ZyXel doesn't seem to work with uPnP? I would go for the Netgears but they don't seem to support 9K jumbo frames for some reason.

UPnP is a feature you'd be looking for in a router, not a switch. Also: Jumbo Frames is something I wouldn't worry about for general home use, as all devices using the network must support it (and you can guarantee that the wireless devices won't) in order for it to work. If you've got a separate gig switch for an iSCSI storage network there are gains to be had, but the questions you're asking tell me that this ain't the case.

Re: Wired router - will this work?

I have two NAS devices which support jumbo frames so I do need it.

And my router will supply UPnP but unfortunately that switch has built-in un-flashable firmware with QoS features that erroneously block UPnP data. So I'm pretty sure I have to avoid it.

Re: Wired router - will this work?

Which devices will you be transmitting these jumbo frames between? If you're accessing data on either NAS device from a device that doesn't support the same sized jumbo frames you'll get either fragmented or dropped packets, which means worse performance rather than better. The machine sending the jumbo frames is not able to determine if the receiving device is capable of receiving: it will send all traffic at the specified frame size.

That said: if you're insistent on jumbo frames then the Netgear GS105 I linked way back in the thread supports frames up to 9720bytes.

Re: Wired router - will this work?

80% of the time for transferring between the the NASes which both support it. Shame the GS105 is over 70% more expensive

Re: Wired router - will this work?

And the other 20% of the time you'll be accepting dropped or fragmented packets? As for cost: the GS205 that Stevie Lee posted also does 9270 bytes as a maximum frame size
