Would an ethernet switch work for this?

Ok I am a complete n00b when it comes to networking. I live in a house with lots of smaller flats with one or two people in each flat. The router is in one of the other flats. An ethernet cable has been routed through the walls into the living room of my flat. However I live in the flat with one other person and neither of us wants to use wireless. If I bought a 2 port ethernet switch could I plug it into the ethernet cable in the living room and then plug in two ethernet cables to the two ports on the ethernet switch? Would this allow me and my house mate to use the internet independently?

    Thanks in advance

Yep, a switch should do the job. You'll be hard pressed to find a 2 port one though, usually the smallest ones are 4 or 5 ports.

Re: Would an ethernet switch work for this?

Well, you'd need three ports - one for the connection into the room, and one for each of you and your housemate.

As burble says though, it'll likely be 5 anyway.

suggestions for cheap ones are in this thread http://forums.hexus.net/networking-b...will-work.html

netgear seems to do the job not had any problems with mine, and its running 4 connections. 2 on 100ft cables. get about 96MB/s pretty much all the time.
