    dns problem

    hi there

    a month or two ago i built a PC , everything was fine my internet was fast. then suddenly i get these DNS messages. thinking it was the my wireless adapter i swapped it with another one (both from the same brand Belkin) i have changed to the Google public server 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 but nothing. everyone else in the house has perfect connection. i have fibre optic as welli am getting really frustrated as to why this is. if disconnect then reconnect it works fine for about 30 secs.


    please help

    Have you changed the settings on the router/modem, or the PC?

    So it's something about your computer. And it's something that has changed. If you've not changed hardware (and what hardware you have is functioning), that leaves software.

    First port of call - thorough virus/malware scanning.

    Tell us what sort of DNS messages you're getting.

    Also, run nslookup google.com and tracert google.com and give us the results.

    im really sorry about the late reply but when i did the nslookup i got

    Dns timed out timeout was two seconds default server unknown
    address 2001:4860:4860:8888

    Start by turning off IPv6

    Then try that nslookup again.

    Cool so now roughly run through these:

    Ping your gateway
    Ping your router's gateway
    Ping 8.8.8.8

    If all ok, ping where you are trying to get to (eg . Hexus).

    If any fail do a tracert instead of a ping.

    Same way you did that nslookup, command prompt.

    Find your gateway from your network settings (ie where you'd find you computers IP).

    Look ar your routers status page for its gateway.

    The rest should be self explanatory.

    If not let us know your windows version.

    Btw. Having turned off ipv6 have you checked that your problem hasn't gone away already?

    no it hasn't gone i cant do anything like i tried to watch a trailer it stopped halfway through

    Turning IPv6 will have no bearing on DNS resolution problems. Pinging IP address of DNS server is not an indication of DNS server actually functioning and resolving names....

    @OP

    Can you include output of 'ipconfig /all' command here? Just run it in cmd.exe and paste the output.

    When your DNS server is supposedly down, can you still ping lets say 8.8.8.8? Again run this from cmd.exe and paste output - command 'ping 8.8.8.8'

    ok so when i pinged my defaualt gateway 4 packets were sent 4 were recieved

    when i pinged 8.8.8.8 i got 4 packets sent 4 packets lost and it timed out

    finnaly when i pinged the last one i got 4 sent 4 recieved however the minimum was 2ms maximum was 11ms and average was 4ms

    ok so i just pinged 48.8.8.8 and all of the packets were lost and it timed out
