    PCI/PCIe modem for Infinity

    Hi All,
    I'm considering building a new router myself so it can run DNS / a proper firewall etc. Is anyone aware of a PCI(e|x) modem which will work with BT Infinity?

    Cheers...

    A vdsl modem? Not seen one. I use the BT box that they installed, just doesn't seem worth fighting that part.

    That gets you ethernet out, which usually goes to a router which is usually going to be a Linux box. I'm guessing this means that if you wanted to you could run PPPoE directly on an ethernet port on a Linux server and miss the router part out.

    I run:

    Phone line -> VSDL box -> Router -> *DMZ switch, stuff like WiFi can connect here* -> Server -> Internal network switch.

    So I get

    * dual firewalls, different so the same attack won't work on both.
    * WiFi security isn't so important, because to get to the internal network would require a VPN.
    * All stuff used is cheap off the shelf.

    Yeah it is OTT for home use, but compared to the easy way of just having a home server plugged into a router all this really cost me is a cheap ethernet card.

    If you want more flexibility from a standard router, have you looked at things like dd-wrt?

    Here in the office we dont use the BT hub, just the VDSL box.

    Phone -> VDSL box -> Firewall (does PPPoE) -> network.

    Just put 2 ethernet cards in the computer, run a PPPoE client on it, and sorted.

    Re: PCI/PCIe modem for Infinity

    At the moment I have:

    Phone -> VDSL box -> Draytek 2820Vn -> network.

    It works OK, but ideally I wanted to have something like:

    Phone -> Device -> network

    As I did when I had standard ADSL2+ - just to cut down on the number of devices which are always on. I could go for an all in one Draytek VDSL device, but ideally I'd like something which is handing out DHCP addresses etc to act as a DNS server too. Seems a bit dumb having two independent devices doing 2 parts of the same job.
