House move - Leave sky Broadband?

    Hi guys,

I took out a full Sky package in December last year, including land line & broadband. I got acceptable speeds at my last place 8mbs sort of thing. We recently moved into our new house though, and sky was set up on Friday, however the speeds I am getting are 1.5 - 2mbs, at off-peak times. Their website says we can expect 0.6-1.8mbs.

This is causing me no end of grief, and having spoken to several of the neighbors, they are ALL with BT fiber for the same reason - only way to get good speeds. Having had a look at it, it doesn't seem like such a bad deal tbh, and I want to make the switch,

Before I ring up Sky, how buggered am I with their 12 month contract. Is moving house & the speed dropping considerably enough to terminate my broadband with them? - I am keeping the TV, movies etc?

Just want to try and gauge how much fo a fight/loosing battle I am uo against. In their T&Cs it says I have within 30 days of activation to terminate.... would that be relevant here?

''30 day Broadband and Talk Satisfaction Guarantee: Available within the first 30 days of all your services being activated. Refund applies to subscription charges only (not set-up charges or non-inclusive call charges) and is pro-rated. Statutory rights are not affected. Not applicable if you change your package.''

They might be more sympathetic if you switched to fibre through Sky, if it's available in the area you've moved to? I've recently switched to Sky fibre, mainly because it's unlimited & without traffic shaping. Getting good speeds at the moment, but it's early days still...

Yeah, I think it would be an option but I would pay more for sky line rental & fibre optic then I would with BT line rental & Inifity and get a slower speed!

Re: House move - Leave sky Broadband?

You can always ring them up and give it a try - I don't think the guarantee is applicable, but that doesn't mean they won't help.

When I moved house with Virgin, I rang up and told them I was moving house, but wasn't moving to the future address for a few months and that I wanted them to suspend the contract. All of that was true. The lady at the call centre said that she would terminate the contract so that I didn't need to make any further payments, and I could just ring up when I was at the new place and complete the move. Had I never rung them back, I'm not sure they would have pursued it, but there's no way of knowing. Point is, I'm not sure it's as hard and fast as their T&Cs might suggest all the time, depending on how you spin it.

I would use the speeds as a backup option - i.e. contact the complaints department, and insist that they cancel your contract due to the appalling connection speed so you can go elsewhere. Then try writing to the chairman or whatever. I doubt ringing up the accounts dept and complaining about your speeds will get you very far, so I'd go with the sugar and honey approach in the first place to see if they'll let you just cancel it somehow, and then if they refuse I would just accept it and pursue it through the complaints dept. I've found them, in most firms, to have a lot more clout and be a lot more accommodating than normal staff - presumably since it's part of their remit to make sure people are happy.

You can save over £50 a year by paying for your line rental up-front. I actually checked this was an option before taking out the contract (I don't think Sky actually mention it on their website).

The speeds for the fibre products from both BT & Sky should be roughly similar - it's all Openreach, after all. I just checked the BT website: the cost of 38mb/s fibre with 40Gb downloads is £15/month, and unlimited downloads is £23/month. The unlimited Sky equivalent is £20/month.

I thing if you try to leave before your contract is up, you will need to pay for each month still outstanding.

Best to try and see if you can get sky fibre. If there is BT fibre in the area, then there should be sky fibre.

Re: House move - Leave sky Broadband?

Gave them a ring this morning and explain the situation to them. Mentioned that the <2mbs estimated speed was not acceptable and they didn't question it at all. Said the MAC code would be e-mailed out to me within 24 hours. Top marks for customer service.

I am moving to BT, paying their line rental up front, and then £15 for the 38mbs & 40gb limit was cheaper then Sky. Also got £86 cashback and £100 Salisbury voucher. All good financially, but the 3 weeks until an engineer can get out is frustrating!

I am not a very patient man and its going to be a painful few weeks browsing slower on my wired home broadband, then it is on my 3G smartphone. Tethering to avoid the slow speeds is likely to occur...

Top marks to Sky on this occasion then! Just don't go over your 3G allowance or you'll end up spending that £86 cashback on mobile data
