    Wired Ethernet Slower Than Wireless

I've been using an cat5e LAN cable connected to my computer to the router (Netgear DGN2000) for sometime, then all of a sudden the speed had dropped to a snails pace and none of my webpages would load up.
I disconnected the LAN cable and plugged in a wireless adapter and everything is back to normal.

Its been like it for 3 days.

Other computes that are connected to router via LAN are OK and so are the wireless devices.
Problem still occurs if I'm the only one connected to the router via the LAN.

I've tried different Ethernet ports on my computer and router but still have the same problem

I haven't installed any new drivers and no windows update

    Any ideas?

Have you tried using a different Ethernet cable to connect to the router? It's certainly been known for cables to start to fail after period of time.

I would also suggest try a new lan cable as well...Have you tried to reboot the router?

I do not have another cable that is long enough. It needs to be 5m.

Can you recommend a good make.

Would rebooting the router loose it settings i.e. username and password it uses to connect the internet?

To Prove if your lan cable is ok either shift one of the other lan connected computers to your location or shift affected computer to one of the other computer positions.

Re: Wired Ethernet Slower Than Wireless

I managed to borrow another LAN cable, hooked it up and it appeared that everything was running near normal.
I managed to run a speed test which I couldn't do before and I got a speed of around 10mb.
I connected the old one back and everything seem to be fine.
The next day, still using the old cable everything was OK then all of a sudden, the speed slowed and the same problem occurred.

I'm going to leave the new cable connected to see if it deteriorates during the day as with the old one.

Do you guys think it could be the router? It was very hot when I touched it (it was on all day thou).

Your router should be on all the time if you are on adsl and you turn it of the exchange thinks there is a problem and can slow your connection.
