    Homeplug/Powerline adaptors

My father is thinking about moving his router nearer the BT point at the front of the house and was thinking of powerline adaptors rather than using wireless. He needs 3, one for near the router, one for near the tellybox and one for upstairs by the PC. The 2 rings are connected so having one upstairs won't be a problem. Can anyone recommend a set of 3 adaptors that will provide a decent speed of connection?

    He was looking at these:
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/devolo-85mbp...ple-kit-264947

but I've not heard a lot about Devolo, and 85Mbps seems a bit slow, considering you never really get near that speed...

    Re: Homeplug/Powerline adaptors

Because you never get near the rated max speed I went for homeplug AV500 spec ones. Sure enough I don't get 500Mbps, but it is way faster than my 40Mbps broadband so for my use that is fine.

I bought a 2 pack originally, and then bought a third of the same type a while later.

The AV spec part seems to mean you get better latency, and they certainly feel fine to use even for gaming. Much better than the wireless-g bridge I used before.

    I bought these ones: http://www.ebuyer.com/322015-tp-link...ck-tl-pa511kit

But I don't see any difference to these, size perhaps?: http://www.ebuyer.com/370669-tp-link...it-tl-pa411kit

The ones I use have a little button on them for pairing, so easy to add another one to the network.

Edit to add: Ah, looks like the cheap ones have 100Mpbs network ports on them so you can never get the full speed. My setup goes through the consumer unit onto another ring, so I only get about 80Mbps anyway and that wouldn't matter to me.

We have 4 of these in our flat: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

500mbps, pair easily (and easily expandable if you want to add more) and £30 for 2.

edit: They are the same ones linked above

Cheers guys, 3 of them for under £50 on Amazon, much better deal than the Devolo ones...

Bear in mind the number of sockets you have available as it might be worthwhile paying extra for the pass-thru models. Saying that I have two and using one on a extension caused no issues (not benchmarked though)

You might need to bear in mind that they don't work when attached to surge-protected power-strips...

I have one of mine running on a standard powerstrip but I've also heard issues about the surge ones.

    Re: Homeplug/Powerline adaptors

the quality of your wiring matters aswell though. I had 200Mbps ones before and i only got around 40Mb from the other side of the room. I just ended up ordering 25m cat5e off ebay for like £7

    Re: Homeplug/Powerline adaptors

I think he'll need at least one pass-through, but the other 2 will go on un-surge protected multi-strips...
