    1Gigabit Network at 100MegaBit speed

    Hey all,

I just got myself a new fangled LG smart TV with all that crap and I am now trying to steam movies and stuff across my network. I am having trouble, and I suspect it is due to my Network connection at 100Megabits. The connection keeps lagging out when I access the folders. I can access the top 1-2 levels, but when I get deeper, and with more items in the folders, it just dies. I suspect this is to do with the large number of files within the folder, and the response time is beyond the minimums the TV expects

Therefore, I upgraded the router and my cables. I got myself a Netgear N300 (DGN2200v3), and due to the 15m cable length to my computer, I added Cat6 cables to everything. However, I am still getting only 100MegaBit connection speed.

My computer is a home built, which has been upgraded so many times the only original piece left is the case. It has a Asus P7P55D-E LX motherboard. The onboard network card has failed previously, and I have installed a Realtek PCI GBE Family Controller.

However, both the computer, and the laptop are still showing 100Mbit connection speeds. Any ideas on what is going wrong? I am just using the windows "status" check to confirm this.

    Thank you for your time

    Bryan

cant really see 100Mb being a bottleneck either. Nice to have the gigabit connection but 100Mb is damn fast. Consider that the majority of offices in the country and their masses of older pc's are all running on 10/100 NICs and switches without this kind of lag. I'd be looking at alternative solutions.

First thing i'd be checking is if you have the same problem when accessing these folders across the network from another device.

Your router doesn't support gigabit ethernet according to some netgear sites?

    Buy something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-5-Po...keywords=GS605

Connect it directly to the router with one cable, and then all the other devices should connect to the switch.

most offices across the country arent streaming HD TV. 100Mb lan across a dumb switch means realistically about 8/9 MB per second. I suspect a blu ray rip will kill this?

a quick google leads me to believe the LG will be 100MB connection.

    couple of tests.

    1. dareos suggestion. do the same browsing on another device to rule out the nas box or whatever the source is.

    2. make another share, with one folder and one video in that. does the tv do the same thing?

also look into the firmware on the TV. can you upgrade it?

Re: 1Gigabit Network at 100MegaBit speed

If the TV is 100Mb port (I'd assumed they were gigabit, but no evidence suggests they are), then yeah, gigabit network won't change anything.

I have an LG Smart TV myself, and it can easily handle high-bitrate media streamed to it. Even if it is 100Mbps, 8/9 megabytes per second is ample for video (the bitrate is normally also measured in Mbps rather than MB/s).

What software are you using to stream the media?

Re: 1Gigabit Network at 100MegaBit speed

jim, not trying to start a speed vs size discussion are we? was just trying to relate the bandwidth to the amount of the file being moved per second. i.e. if your hour long film is 4 GB then divide 4GB by 3600 to get the amount of data moving per second. fag packet calculations i know (no accounting for dark scenes, static scenese, quiet scenes etc) but its a rough start.

Re: 1Gigabit Network at 100MegaBit speed

i stream video at bluray quality over powerline adapters, i doubt very much i get more than 70Mbps over those. No problems here (cept when my server shuts down midstream to install updates, leaving me scratching my head for 5 mins trying to work out why WMP shut down for no reason )

I don't really get your point. Using your basic calculation, and taking a worst case scenario of a 2 hour film that's 40GB (I don't have anything at anything like this bit-rate, but worst case scenario and so on), we get 45.5 Mbps. That's a long way shy of 100.

Re: 1Gigabit Network at 100MegaBit speed

Hmm, I might be taking that router back then. He sold it as a gigabit router. But now I see he was showing me this router instead:

    wnr3500l

    Firmware is up to date.

Its not the streaming that is the issue. As I try to get down the explorer menus to the video, it lags out and resets the connection. Granted there is a few terabytes of data there.

Anyway, seems like it is not the network, as I can stream across it to the laptop which is on the wireless. Thanks for your time

I suspect it is related to the software you're using, personally.

Doubt it is the NIC. Probably just rubbish software on TV or from Nero.

.Got anything like Symantec Network Protection on you PC? Any network level security product can cause juddering.

I would try something else, like PS3 Media Server (http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/) or TVersity (http://tversity.com/).

I've used the latter successfully with my LG, and the former is what I'll probably be installing in the next few days to use with it in future. I used PS3MS years ago with my PS3, and it was excellent then - I understand it's branched out into all sorts of different clients now, including LG TVs.

I think I finally worked it out. Nero doesnt tell you how long it is taking to catalogue your stuff.... I believe it took it 3 days to finish my 10 TB. Works fine now, 3D movies and everything across the network

    haha

fyi 1080p streaming over the Internet needs 6mb/s for the likes of iplayer and youtube. my mate was in a similar situation to yourself some 7tb of "music" and some 22tb of other stuff and he just wouldnt leave his system on long enough to catalog.
