Some powerline adapters say they are 500Mps but in the case of the cheaper 500Mps adapters they only have 100Mps Lan port so is there any point in buying these over the cheaper 200Mps versions?

500mbps is on both directions... ie 250 each way. TBH you'd be doing very well if you get >100mbps on the 500kit.
I replaced a set of 85mbps ones with some 500s and throughput went from ~14mbps to around 50mbps.
I figured if it can drive the underlying mains cable better then you have a better chance of getting 100Mbit, and the cost difference didn't seem much when I got mine.
I don't have a 200Mbit version to see if the link speed drops, but I can't see it being better.
