    Dodgy Wireless Signal?

    Hi guys,

I live in a new estate - 6-7 years old. The area is poorly serviced via copper line broadband, maximum speed is only a couple of mb. Luckily BT do their infinity in the area so 90% of the houses have it.

Now, over Ethernet I get a decent 23-27mb, but over wireless that is halved. At the opposite end of the house (bedroom) I have to disconnect/reconnect in order to pick up on the internet connection, and it is halved again.

I presume the fact I can 'find' 15+ other BT wireless networks, no doubt with the same router & wifi config is interfering with my network.

I have changed 'channel' a couple of times (random picking) and it hasn't made any difference. My history with BT's customer service means I'd appreciate any suggestions here first before I ring them!

    Many thanks

    Re: Dodgy Wireless Signal?

It'll be a bit of that and also a bit of .....

    "Bt Homehub is shocking"

If you are on copper.. get a new router... if on infinity... get a better wireless access point.

    Re: Dodgy Wireless Signal?

    Yep, on infinity!

Is it safe to assume that with a better wireless access point connected to the BT modem (?) should sort it?

    Re: Dodgy Wireless Signal?

If you're plugging a cable router into the white box that comes with infinity, you'll need to use the username from the hub (bthomehub@btbroadband.com), leave the password blank. ive got it running into my WNDR4500, works like a charm ^^ just be aware that the next Hub, 4 IIRC, will have the modem bundled into it, so if they offer you an upgrade, watch out for that

    Cheers guys!

Looking on amazon i like the look of the below. Seems to have good reviews, i have heard of the brand and it looks snazzy.

Anyone have any better recommendations for a similar budget one?

you will be suprised how much a brick wall can reduce your speed. Have you tried fitting a windsurfer on your router?

    Re: Dodgy Wireless Signal?

I have tried quite a few routers in my flat including netgear, Belkin, dlink and a couple of others, none would cover the whole flat no matter where I placed them or what channel they were on. I have put it down to a combination of the solid walls and the huge numbers of other routers in the area. I think that sometimes the conditions are just bad for wireless.
Fortunately I managed to run quite a few cables in so most of the computers are cabled but for phones and laptops, you need it.
I ended up just running 1 router and a second access point connected via Ethernet to get coverage.

If you cant run Ethernet cable in, have you considered giving powerline a go?

Weird... my cisco 877 has no issues with one 3 foot thick stone wall.. But need a repeater for the second.

    Re: Dodgy Wireless Signal?

I have ran cables to the study/Gaming PC, and some HDMi over 2 x cat5 cables to the bedroom to get Sky TV there, but for my laptop It is just too much hassle being tied to a cable per room.

As it stands I just have to disconnect/reconnect and i do pick up the wireless single, and the speeds are still plenty good enough. i just get fed up of having to connect/reconnect everytime. When in the lounge sat next to it is fine.

I will try and that £20 Buffalo WAP and see if that makes any difference, if not I will put the Router in the study upstairs so it is closer to the bedroom, and see if that makes any difference!

    Cheers guys

The above also seems like good value for money. Between the above and the Buffalo one i linked to can anyone suggest which to go for?

They both look pretty similar to me!

    Re: Dodgy Wireless Signal?

Expert reviews gives the belkin 8.5/10 and the Buffalo 8.0/10. So no real difference.
I'd go on features most appropriate for you, if any.

    Re: Dodgy Wireless Signal?

The belkin looks great but I am struggling to get it set up.

The quick setup Cd fails in the first hurdle... Before I begin I must select my country but no options are given. Fat lot of good that is the belkin technical support took 4 attempted to spell my last name then we're baffled when I couldnt connect to the routers diagnostic page.

Now... I managed to get into it when I first setup it up, but now it comes up as unable to connect? Tried resetting everything, unplugging everything and trying everything else I could think of - which wasn't much.

Laptop is connected to the router wireless, but the modem isn't talking to the router which seems to be the old up.

Does the BT infinity modem need any fancy settings or is it plug & play?

    Re: Dodgy Wireless Signal?

I finally got around to doing my setup properly ( mounting infinity box on the wall, actually nailing the cat6 down and so on) the other week, and it took me ages to connect to my netgear router to input the bt login info. Couldn't find the setup page on the local network, router setup page would freeze, that sort of thing. In my case it was skype constantly pinging the router trying to get access to the internet. You making sure that nothing running on your pc needs internet connection? As for the modem, so long as your router has the login name from the homehub in it (im using pppoe on mine) it shouldnt need anything else

    Re: Dodgy Wireless Signal?

How did you get back into the router's config page though? The Belkin shows wireless & wired connections, but no modem or other lights. All programes are closed down, including skype etc

Typing in 192.168.2.1 brings up page cannot be found. I have tried every combination of of resetting/restarting/unplugging/clearing cache but alas nothing!
