Very strange speed issue with Zen Internet (FTTC)

I used to get 75mb D/ 18mb U in speed tests with the Zen Internet FTTC service up until the past few weeks when speedtests dropped to about 15mb-20mb D and only 1mb U.

After connecting to my VPN (boxpn.net - london) my speed shoots up to 60mb D and 5MB U (And I suppose would reach 70/15+ if the VPN was faster).

Maybe Zen implemented some kind of speed cap on my connection and a VPN circumvents it? I've emailed them to see what they say about it.

A VPN couldn't circumvent that sort of differential. If they use data compression then you can get marginally more throughput with the VPN tunnel up but not this much.

It's more likely that there's a connectivity issue between Zen and the speed test site and when you're connected to the VPN the data is routed differently. What site are you using?

Also, what's the sync rate reported by your router?

Re: Very strange speed issue with Zen Internet (FTTC)

The speed issue was consistent with speedtest.net and the BT wholesale speed test, the VPN circumvented this (router software) issue though to a large degree which is strange.

It ended up being a router software issue. Disabling address filtering (parental controls) on the router improved things a lot but not completely. Zen sent me a new router config to try and then a new router, it's up to 62mb/17mb sec now. Zen are working on a software fix for the Technicolor TG582N which may take up to a month.

Speed tests done with a direct PPPoE connection to the BT Openreach box yield the proper 76mb/18mb results which is a good sign.
