2 wireless routers on 2 different connections, can they have same SSID ?

    Hi all.
I'm in the process of setting up internet connection in our horseback riding club.
Due to distance issues we have decided on getting two internet connections.
These are wireless as the ISPs transmitter mast is very close.
We would like to have 2 wireless networks at 2 locations, so both buildings and the surroundings are covered.
Is it possible to set both routers up with the same SSID and different channels and then the users computers, phones etc. will see it as one network ?
    Regards
    Christian

It'll most likely work in that devices should be able to flip from one AP to the other but if they switch internet connections at the same time then you'll have problems with active tcp sessions that will need to be recreated.

Can you not run an ethernet cable from location to the other and keep a single internet connection?

    Thanks :-)
No that will need both a quite long cable and some digging which will need some cleaning up before the ground looks good again.
I think we can live with that issue with connections that must be recreated.
Most of the users will not be downloading very much, it will be facebook, twitter etc.
The clubs pc's that will do the updating of results etc. will not be moved from their location during the events.

Or point to point wireless bridge to extend one network over to the second location?

That could be an option, but aren't we talking a quite expensive solution ?

Re: 2 wireless routers on 2 different connections, can they have same SSID ?

Are the buildings on the same mains electricity meter, or do the locations have their own supply?
If on the same meter, a mains modem could be cheap option. That saves a second internet connection, and allows the whole lot to be one structured network.

I use a bunch of these to get internet around the house: http://www.ebuyer.com/322015-tp-link...ck-tl-pa511kit

Not these days. Most APs have a bridge mode and directional antennas are easy to come by, even ones designed to be left outside.

I don't know.....I don't think so as there are fuse boxes in both places.

I will se if the setup with 2 connections results in problems and if they do so, we can cancel the second connection and try the AP solution.

Another advantage is that you would not have two subscriptions to pay for, so any additional equipment would pay for itself in time.

Blimey, 35 miles range seems a bit hopeful. But still...

How far away are the buildings? One of those at the first building pointing at the second building *might* be enough if they are close enough.

Also, what sort of access point are you currently using? Most routers come with a one or two antenna wifi built in, a proper access point with 3 antenna wireless-n can make a huge difference to coverage and they don't cost that much.

2-300 m apart. But both are steelplate covered so if we want a good signal inside we might get a poor one outside.
The routers are two identical of these:

I have just ordered them so I can't tell much about them.

Re: 2 wireless routers on 2 different connections, can they have same SSID ?

I have bought two identical TP-Link TL-MR3420 wireless N routers, and they have some WDS functionality.
If I skip one of the internet connections and get lucky and the two routers come to see each other, can this WDS solve my problem ?
Will both routers be accessible via the same SSID ?
