Question Need help understanding Virgin Media Traffic Management 30Mb

I just upgraded to 30Mb virgin cable broadband, and reading the traffic management policy I'm not clear on what the 1 hour and 2 hour thresholds are exactly...

"1 Hour threshold: 2750MB" - Does that mean if I download 2750MB within 1 hour it gets applied? Or is it if I download 2750MB at any time between "When does it apply: 4PM - 11PM"?...

And then what is the 2 hour threshold about? It's confusing to me and very unclear... Can anyone elaborate how it works? I'm trying to work out limits to set on my P2P

    Hi,

Yeah if you download more that 2.75Gb in one hour it gets throttled between 4-11pm weekdays and 11am-11pm weekends.

It only lasts for one hour - two at most (hence the threshold thiing) but if you're using it really heavily it can last till the end of the peak time. In peak times they automatically reduce download speeds by 30% for P2P and newsgroups. The max drop in speed by throttling is 40%.
To be honest its hardly a bother. I've noticed max download speeds of about 2.2Mbps in peak but then it goes up to 3.8Mbps off peak which is faster than I expect.

I've been downloading a fair amount recently due to the Steam sale and also some TV shows etc but its never caused me a problem. As much as the service from Virgin is truly, depressingly awful I still stay with them for the broadband - its been really good, consistent speeds and pretty reliable.

EDIT: You probably read it but - http://my.virginmedia.com/traffic-ma...or-higher.html

It seems like a very fair traffic management policy then, if it's only if you download 2750MB within an hour! - I was worried it was if you download 2750MB in that whole period of 4-11pm.

Re: Need help understanding Virgin Media Traffic Management 30Mb

it used to be if you download so much between such and such a time you would be smacked down to 10% of you headline rate for 4 hours. So if you went over just before of peak you would get 4 hours into of peak throttled.

I remember when it first come out they were saying only 5% of people would be affected. The thing is it many more people end up experiencing it at some point than those who just had a set limit per month. I don't download over 40gb a month but some days I occasionally need to download a fair bit and get hit by throttling on virgin so when u actually needed the speed it vanished. But that was then and I don't know what its like now.

That's exactly what my traffic management used to be before I upgraded, I was on 10Mb... but just had my speed automatically doubled to 20Mb, but they changed my bill and I automatically lost a loyal customer discount because I had been with them since 1998 (when they were eurobell)...

So I phoned up to question why my discount had been taken off without my knowledge... It was about 11pm I phoned, and it was an american I spoke to (or an indian with a very good american accent)... He said he tried to put the discount back on, but the system wasn't allowing it, and his supervisor said I would have to call back between 8-8 and use option 5 to speak to the department that would be able to fix it...

Option 5 was retentions... I explained it to them and they again apologised, and offered me an upgrade to Tivo and 30Mb with a new loyalty discount that will last 2 years...

I was paying £30.64 p/m for 10Mb broadband, M TV and XL Phone... But now I'm paying £30.99 for 30Mb, still M TV (would have been extra for M+, and I don't need the extra channels) and still XL phone. I was excited about getting an extra 10Mb for free... and then I got an additional 10Mb for free Oh, and a Tivo box to replace the standard (not +) box And a superhub to replace the old ambit modem.

    I'm very happy

The 30Mb traffic management is much nicer than the old 10Mb

    But...

The 10Mb I was on was a 75% speed reduction and 5 hours... and yeah.. I often used to accidentally hit the limit just before 10pm (the 10Mb traffic management hours were 5-10pm), and I'd have a 75% reduction until almost 3am
