    Getting my network sorted!

    Hey folks

Looking for some advice, I'm currently running a Virging 100Mb connection and if I'm honest it hasn't been too snappy over the past few months, I get the speeds advertised but I want to get the best out of it.

    Currently I have:

Modem - Virgin (just modem not hub)
    Router - D-Link DIR-655 - Connected to this are 4 devices
Switch #1 - Netgear GS105 - Connects to router with 3 devices connected to this
Switch #2 - Negear GS108 - Connects to router with 7 devices connected to this
    Wireless AP - TP-Link - Connects to swtich #2
I also have some homeplugs connected to switch #2

There are around 28 devices (wired and wireless), around 10 of these can be connected at any one time of them around 6 will be accessing the internet (at maximum)

I've asked elsewhere, one suggestion was to connect all wired devices to the switch and just connect a switch to the router and nothing else to the router straining the router less. Another suggested that I get a smart switch but that seemed excessive.

I'm entitled to a free Virgin SuperHub 2 but I haven't heard good things about any router/modem provided by the ISP. The switch solution would be my cheapest option I reckon and I think if I disable wireless on the router and just use the AP for wireless that might help.

Anyone got any suggestions? Would a new router be beneficial do you think?

General LAN throughput seems fine I can get 70MB/s rates from my server connected to the router to my PC connected to switch #2.

    Re: Getting my network sorted!

Superhub 2 seems a far better device than the original so far, not had extensive testing of it personally so far.

Its main advantage though would be gigabit ports I would think and dual upstreams, if its a modem you are using its an Ambit 300, not sure off the top of my head whether it can used bonded upstream.

Need more info on your network topology, might be best looking at each individual device and making sure that its connected in the most advantageous way. Using correct cabling and devices with gigabit capability connected to the same switch with same capability etc etc

IT's not art but I think this should do:

I'm going to take the new modem, just found out I can get 120Mb, I've got to get an engineer to install it though apparantly.

    Re: Getting my network sorted!

That certainly makes sense, though you are limited to one GbE feed between d7-10, HP1&2 & WAP#1 and d4-6 and then again limited to one GbE feed between d4-10, HP1&2 and WAP#1 with d1-3.

If you have something like a 24 port switch (or even a 16, I'm just thinking of room for expansion) then each device has a full GbE link to each other through the switch. This eliminates the bottlenecks you have by using a couple of switches. Only likely to be an issue if your network runs at high levels of utilisation for more than brief periods (thinking over the network backup of large files, streaming of uncompressed or high bit rate HD content etc).

As for the type of switch, I've got Layer 2 Managed switches here. TBH, not used any of the features on them as yet, though I justified them as I picked them up for little expense on eBay. A standard switch without any management facilities would be fine for the network you've outlined.

    Re: Getting my network sorted!

Right, I've reconfigured and got rid of a homeplug from one of the switches.

Things seem a little better, network throughput with transferring files seems a bit more consistent. Thanks for the input, I'll give it a run through over the next week or so to see how it goes.

    definitely a better setup

Shub 2 can always be put in modem mode and own router used if you aint happy with the wireless, but it broadcasts on 2.4 and 5GHz concurrently, which is nice.

still no real hands on experience of it tho
