    What's Broken in my Setup?

    My setup:
Modem (Virgin Media Superhub) -> Router (Apple Airport) -> Extender (Huawei WS320) -> PC (Edimax EW-7612Pln network card)

Up until last week, things were going fine. Speeds a little slower than the rest of the house but my PC is furthest from the router (that's why I use an extender). With extender I was getting ~15Mb/s. Without it I get next to nothing, less than 1Mb/s for sure.

However, all of a sudden, my speeds seemed to drop massively, to the point where I can barely even load Google in under 20 seconds, similar to before I had the extender. Every time I reboot my PC speeds are fast again, for about 2 minutes. Then they randomly drop. Likewise, when I hit the reset switch on the extender, speeds increase, then decrease 2 - 5 minutes later. When I reset my router/modem, speeds remain as they were before reset.

Is something faulty? There's certainly something not right... But it doesn't make sense that when I reset my extender speeds jump temporarily again... Could that be on the blink? Usually when something goes wrong, it goes wrong. Not partially wrong after 2 minutes of use. O_O

    TL;DR
Internet speed drops without explanation after about 2 minutes of PC use
Return to normal levels after PC reboot or extender reset, no change when router/modem reset.

    Cheers,
    Adam

EDIT: 1 more thing, prior to these issues last week, network monitor gadget was telling me I was getting 95 - 100% signal strength. No it fluctuates fairly wildly between 40% and 90%. Huh?

Re: What's Broken in my Setup?

Could be some new wireless devices on the same channel in the area causing congestion? Neighbours etc?
Check out inSSIDer it will check which channel are being used in your area and you could try a less congested one.
If not you must try to eliminate problem devices. You should try and get a network cable from the pc to the apple airport or virgin media hub? Is that possible?
Is it only on the PC that the speeds are dropping? Do you have other devices which you connect to the extender to verify if its the PC itself or the extender?

The fact you say the signal strength has dropped suggests congestion/interference if no other changes have been made within your home? Have you added any electrical devices or had any wiring changes etc done?

Have you considered homeplugs / powerline adapters where you just run your network over the household wiring? Sounds like it may offer a better solution as opposed to the extender.
