    WEP & WPA mix

I am using a BT voyager 2100 & have a PC & laptop that are connected
Wirelessly using the PC & laptop cards that came with the package
I’m using WPA encryption, as I understand that this is the most secure.
The problem: I now have another laptop and have bought a D-Link DWL G650+ laptop card and after 2 hours of trying to figure out why I could not get the D-Link equipped laptop to join the network I read the box. WEP the D-Link does not do WPA
Am I right in thinking that I should be using WPA?
Is the D-Link upgradeable to WPA or
Should I just fallback to WEP on the whole setup?

If your card is THIS, you may simply need updated drivers; they were touting WPA as a Spring 2003 download.

Don't fall back to WEP, the card is supposed to support WPA.

A useful reference site to find out the certifications of many wireless devices is:
    http://www.wi-fi.org/OpenSection/cer...ucts.asp?TID=2

Check the boxes on the left that you are interested in and hit submit, then browse down the results which are sorted by manufacturer, then by type.

WPA requires hardware support from the hardware, the drivers, and Windows XP as the OS to operate natively.
I think there are some solutions where the vendors provide their own client for WPA support for other OS's, but I've not played with those.

With the right hardware, drivers, XP SP2 and Wireless Zero Configuration service, setting up a pretty secure wireless network is now very simple.
I use the D-Link 2100AP+ access point with WPA and a mixture of wireless cards, it was a doddle to set up, but the SMC AP I tried insisted on only working properly if I used the factory default IP, etc. at first.
~ I have CDO. It's like OCD except the letters are in alphabetical order, as they should be. ~

If you cant get the card working with WPA then use WEP its weakness is hugely over exaggerated.

Thanks people, now sorted and running WPA-SPK got the latest drivers from the D-Link website altough, if anyone from D-Link is browsing, the support site does NOT make it clear what improvements are made to updates before you download them!

    I DL:
Driver for Win 98SE/Me/2000/XP (h/w rev Bx)
Wireless Utility v2.02 (for rev Bx)

Yeah, d-link UK tech and customer support are awful, I found I had much better success with the australian site (they actually list the changes to the various drivers and firmware..)
